Shafter, California was founded in 1846 by George Shafter and his wife Lydia. The land that now makes up the town of Shafter was first claimed by both George Shafer and his brother Michael. In 1849, George Shafer sold the land to John Sutter for $2,500. Sutter used it as part of his Rancho San Francisco de Asís grant to farmers in what is now Fresno County. In 1851, John Sutter established the townsite of Shafter on the east side of present day Fresno Street between Yreka and Tulare Counties. The town grew rapidly due to its location and its access to water resources. By 1865, there were over 100 residents in Shafter. In 1872, Alvarado Valley Railroad was completed from Sacramento through Fresno County and into Mariposa County. This made it possible for goods to be transported long distances quickly and allowed for more business development in Shafter. With increased trade opportunities came increased social unrest in the area due to competition from larger businesses. In 1878, a group of businessmen organized a local militia known as the Citizens’ Militia League in order to keep their town safe from crime During World War I (1914-1918), many women left their homes behind to join military service during wartime 1917-1920 because they felt they had no other choice given the lack of affordable housing available back then. Many women also chose not to return home after war ended because they found little work or opportunity available once again in their locality The post-war boom period saw an increase in population growth throughout California especially around Fresno County which led eventually to annexation by Fresno City on October 1st 1951 On November 15th 1957 voters approved Measure M ( proposition 2) which resulted in giving cityhood status and equal rights with citizens of Fresno City became one of 36 cities and towns located within Greater Los Angeles Area on January 1st 1959 . On December 3rd 1959 Mayor Lovejoy announced plans for a new shopping center being built just southshore at what is now Treats Marina Shopping Center which would result in job loss for many locals including many small businesses who depended on sales tax revenues generated by that complex
