Shafter, California is a small town in the Sacramento Valley of California. The population was 7,652 at the 2010 census. It is located in El Dorado County. The first people to live in what is now Shafter were the local Ohlone Indians. They used to hunt and gather around Lakeshore Creek and Point Arena Creek. In 1851, Captain John Sutter led an expedition into present-day Sacramento County and arrived at the mouth of Point Arena Creek. He named it "Sutter's Bay" after him. Captain Sutter's party found gold near what is now Shafter on March 11, 1851. A group of American miners from Stockton started living in Shafter during this time and called it "Oktoberfest". The first post office in Shafter was established on December 6, 1852. It was called Indianola Post Office because that is whereCaptain John Sutter had disembarked his ship "Endicott" with his gold crewmen following his discovery of gold near Lake Noegan on October 29, 1850." In 1863, a group of Mormon pioneers founded Spanish Fork Canyon Station just east of today's town limits while they awaited permission from Brigham Young to build a settlement there instead of closer to temples in Utah City proper. The rest area became known as Spanish Fork Ranch when the station's landowner sold it to Mormon settlers in 1893 (the original surveyor for Spanish Fork Canyon Station included). The first school district was organized here on November 16, 1909 by Mr. Folsom from part of Butte County which he took over from Doniphan School District #2 due to financial difficulties caused by World War I; however don't confuse this date with 1909 - District 2 disbanded three years later effective December 15th 1915 due largely to lack Of students .
