Shafter, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,593 at the 2010 census. It is located on the edge of the Mojave Desert and lies about halfway between Los Angeles and San Bernardino. The first white person to set foot in Shafter was John Wesley Shafter in 1879. He built a cabin on what is now State Route 99. In 1881, he founded the towns of East Valley and West Valley along US 99. The name "Shafter" was taken from his childhood home in Ireland where he had been brought up as a Catholic seminarian. In 1923, Shafter incorporated as a city with a population of 5,000 people. In 1951 it merged with neighbouring East Valley to form one municipality which still exists today as Shafter-East Valley City Councilmember Scott Wiener's ward (i.e., east valley). Shafter is a small town in the southern part of California. It was founded in 1868 by John Shafter and his wife, Emma. The Shatters were the first Anglo-American settlers in what is now California. They are buried at nearby Mount Shatter, which overlooks Shafter. The town became a rail stop on the Central Pacific Railroad in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It also served as the site of an unsuccessful gold rush in 1903-04. The post office closed in 1907, but it reopened as a general store in 1914. The store closed again in 1951 but reopened as a gas station/cafeteria in 1959. In 1984, the town lost its charter and ceased to exist entirely.
