It had been a mission since 1847 and now functions as a small community center with a museum and historical museum annex. Shafter’s history began in 1847 when Father José Gomez founded the Mexican Mission San José de Shafter (or Shafter), about southeast oftoday’s town of SHAFTERVILLE on the banks of the River Shasta. On July 3, 1849, Padre Francisco García y Castilla served as “Guardiano” (watchman) at San José de Shafter while Father Gomez continued to serve as pastor. In 1861,Father Gomez relocated the mission to what is now known as downtown SHAFTERVILLE after its original location became too difficult to maintain; however, construction on San José de Shafter resumed in 1865 and it formally opened on September 8 that year by Commandant Pedro Ríos Cano y Encinas. The first chapel built at San José de Shaferville was dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe which replaced an earlier structure destroyed during a storm in 1848. A second chapel was also built soon afterwards for use by visiting clergy from other missions who were then required to stop at San José de Shafferville for services prior to continuing their journey eastward across country or upriver into Oregon or Nevada. The first priest assigned permanently to San Jose de Shafferville was Father Juan Manuel Cabrera who arrived on October 15,1858; he served until his death in 1862 uponwhichFather Ignacio López took over his charge until his own death in 1916). A third chapel was erected shortly thereafter which combined elements from both existing chapels- this one still stands today next door to the current cultural center complex (Original Baptist Church). However, when finished it burned down following an accidental fire which left substantial damage behind ().
