Shafter, California is a census-designated place located in Kern County, California. The population was 7,724 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Clovis–Fremont Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Shafter were prospectors and miners who discovered gold in 1849. In 1853, James Hahn founded the Hahn and Dodge Railroad to get goods to market from Fresno and other mining areas in Central California. The town's early years were difficult as there was little natural water available for irrigation. However, over time Shafter developed into an agricultural center with a large cotton crop and other industries such as lumbering and tourism soon followed. In 1912 Shafter was renamed after General George Armstrong Custer after his death during the Battle of Little Big Horn near Fort Riley on August 6th that year. At that time it had a population of just 10 people but by 1920 it had reached 100 residents. After World War II many farmers converted their land todryland agriculture which led to increased competition for water resources between farmers, developers and government agencies; however, Shafter has remained largely rural since then with limited development outside of its small downtown core where several businesses still operate today including One Stop Shop convenience store/grocery chain, A&P convenience store/gas station and post office (now known as ZIP code 91746).
