Shafter, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. It is situated on the eastern border of Kern County and Bakersfield County. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. The name Shafter comes from the native Tongva people who lived there before European settlement. The settlers called it "Nahua" which means "place where they could surveys." In 1881, Alpheus Howe Shaffer settled there with his wife and two children. They named their new town after him. The first post office in Shafter was established in 1885. When Shaffer died in 1915, his wife took control of the post office and continued to serve until her death in 1927. In 1936, the community became an incorporated town under the name of North Amboy Township. Shakespeare's play Macbeth took its inspiration from early settler Alpheus Howe Shaffer and his daughter-in-law Emma Howe Shaffer's war against Yaqui Indians on October 7,1876 near Nahua Rocks west of present day North Amboy Township (now part of Needles). On November 9th 1916 local law enforcement arrived to find that Emma had married one of those Indian men and he had taken her back to his home village across the county line in what is now Owens Valley In 1940, a school opened up at Naha Rancho Schoolhouse as part of a larger effort by then-Kern County Superintendent Rufus Custer to get more kids into school during World War II On December 5th 1941 Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor bringing WW2 to America A group of citizensof North Amboy Township formed Citizens for Americanism or CAPTCHA when they realized their water supply wasn't going to be handled by either side during WWII

Shafter, California was founded in 1859 by Charles Shafter and his wife Angelina. The town was named for General John Shafter, who served as a cavalry officer during the Mexican-American War. A post office called Shafter was established in 1859, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1875. The town received its first census tally in 1870, and held its first election that year. In 1874, Shafter incorporated as a town under the name of Fillmore. Fillmore's incorporation came about because of pressure from neighboring towns that wished to annex part of what is now Faulconer County. In 1905, the city of Downey merged into Shafter.
