Shafter is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 5,069 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield-Lodi, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shafter was founded as a post office in 1885 by J.D. Shaffer and Wm Hargrave. The name means "the place where the shepherds grazed." In 1912, the post office moved to its present location on North Main Street. The first store in town opened in 1915 and was run by Mrs. Lillie Ewing and her husband Sam Shaffer. From 1979 through 1984, Mr. & Mrs.(Mr.) Pyle operated the store with their son Rick Pyle as manager for one year before being replaced by his wife Jeanette Pyle who retired from business operations after twenty years of operation when Rick passed away in 2006; however, Jeanette's sons have continued to operate the store since then as co-owners with their father's widow Linda (Pyle) Giannini (Giannini). In 1996, local businessman Donny Hamlin bought the old Post Office property adjacent to SHFHS campus from Mrs Jeanette Pyle for $2 million which he used to build his current shopping center next door - Donny Hamlin Plaza (SHFHS Campus). SHFHS Campus includes an indoor/outdoor pool/sports complex/golf course as well as restaurants and nightlife services including a music hall, movie theater and several large stores including Sears & Roebuck etc.. Donny Hamlin also operates two high school baseball teams which play at nearby Kern Valley High School: The Dragons and Titans..
