Shafter is a small town located in the Kern County of California, United States. The community was founded in 1887 by James Shafter and his wife AnnaMaria. It lies on the banks of the Bakersfield River, about 20 miles northeast of Bakersfield. The Shafter post office served the community from 1887 until it closed in 1934. The town was named for James A. Shafer, an early settler who had farms along both sides of the river. A cotton gin and mill were built in Shafter around 1890; these properties are now part of the Kern County Museum Complex. In 1892, a group of men from Bakersfield organized to purchase and develop land near what is now Shafter. They named their new venture Hilmar Ranch after Norwegian immigrant Ole Hilmarsen, who had settled there in 1868. The ranch encompassed more than 5 square miles (12 km2), including present-day Shafter and parts of neighboring townships such as Chico, Needles, and Visalia. By 1902, Hilmar Ranch was yielding crops that supported up to 100 people; later that year, a $5 million bond issue raised money for infrastructure improvements on the ranch including a water main and irrigation canals. Shafer post office operated from 1903 to 1935; it was renamed Kesey after William Fenton Kesey, an American author whose work often involved travels across North America via stagecoach or wagon trainaddle. In 1916, Kesey married local girl Lillie Belle Wesson; they decided to name their young daughter after her mother—an event which helped popularize roundabouts throughout much of California during this time frame. After World War I ended with Japan's victory over Germany at battles like Ypres (1918), many Japanese immigrants arrived in Southern California looking for work opportunities; some chose to move into northern California communities such as Stockton or Merced while others established themselves in southeastern Kern County .
