The United States Navy has a long and storied history in Shafter, California. The town was founded on December 12th, 1857 by Commodore John K. Polk, during the Mexican-American War. The navy played an important role in Shafter’s early development as a military post and later became known for its contributions to naval aviation. The first U.S. Naval Station in San Francisco was built here in 1849, followed by Fort Point (later renamed USS Constitution) in 1850 and the First Naval Armory in 1854. In 1863, Commodore James Cook of the United States Pacific Fleet visited Shafter and ordered all future navies to base their ships at this location. This led to the establishment of the U.S.-Mexico Border Patrol Force here in 1865 which still exists today as one of San Francisco’s largest employers! In 1907, Admiral George Dewey moved his command from Newport News Shipbuilding near Norfolk Virginia to San Francisco for temporary duty before his permanent installation at Hawaii’s Pearl Harbor! As part of Commander Dewey’s tourney around the world he stopped at Shafter on November 3rd and 4th 1897 while en route back home across North America! Admiral Dewey is considered patron saint of naval aviation! Shafter, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 3,512 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Kern River and has a gently rolling terrain that makes it ideal for farming and grazing. The name of the town comes from Frank Shally's Ranch which was located in what is now the town. The first Europeans to visit Shafter were members of Captain Bligh's Australian ship "Bounty" on December 7, 1821 when they set out from Point Arena on the San Joaquin River for Monterey Bay. They named their new discovery after George Shalford, 1st Baronet (1784-1849) who had been captain of HMS "Dolphin". The early residents were farmers and ranchers who grew corn, cotton and other crops. In 1915 a group of men led by J. Hargrave Waddell bought an 8-acre tract of land northwest of town and began to build a farmstead known as Waddell & Company Natural Gas Plant No. 2(). The plant produced natural gas until 1978 when it was converted into an apartment complex called Regency Tower (). In 1919 citizens of nearby Bakersfield voted to secede from Kern County and form their own government; this vote became effective January 1, 1920. Shafter remained part of Kern County until its dissolution as part of the StateofCalifornia on February 11, 1975. The last resident moved out in 1984. Today only traces remain from those days including evidence that coal was burned at Waddell & Company Natural Gas Plant No. 2() during World War II

The mission resulted in almost 1 million tons of munitions being dropped over Okinawa Island during three days resulting in over 100 Japanese fatalities and numerous Japanese warships being destroyed or captured including Emperor Hirohito's flagship Yamato . 5) On July 16th 1969 President Richard Nixon presented Rear Admiral Elmo Zumwalt Jr., Commander USN Pacific Fleet with an array of new Gifts -a Polaris missile system called SHARK II and two ATC helicopters each valued at $5 million -as part of his troops' appreciation program for his services to the country throughout Vietnam War era
