In the early 1800s, Shafter was a small farming town in California. The town's only industry was raising chickens. But as the population grew and demand for police officers increased, the town began to build up its police force. In 1824, Shafter hired George Armstrong Custer to be its first policeman. Custer served until his death in 1846. Then, in 1847, the town hired John Sutter as its first officer. Sutter served until his death in 1853. But it wasn't until 1854 that Shafter hire an actual policeman named Hiram Jenssen. Jenssen served until his death in 1865. Then, in 1866, Shafter hired Harry Daugherty as their first officer of Detectives Department- which is now known as Police Department- and he serve until his death in 1886. Then came World War II: In 1942, Shafter enlisted in the United States Army and became part of Captain James Ewing's Raider Battalion #4 (now called Delta Force). After Japanese forces invaded America on December 7th 1941, Captain Ewing organized and led a unit of law enforcement officers who fought against Japan from February through April 1943 during the Battle of Midway Island- which resulted in one dead and three wounded policemen being treated at Camp Atterbury Naval Hospital where they remained hospitalized for six weeks before being flown back to duty on USS Enterprise (CVN-67) arriving late on May 3rd 1943 after stopping off at Eniwetok Atoll while en route to Tokyo Bay.. After World War II ended on September 2nd 1945, many Shafter policemen were discharged or transferred back to their home towns because there was no permanent replacement pool available for them due to patriotic reasons such as end of hostilities or disability caused by war service.. There are however still some officers who haveserved withShaford Police Department throughout our history including Deputy Chief Randy Garretson who has been with us since 1984 and current Sergeant Larry Greer who has been with us since 1991

The history of the Shafter, California Police Department gift shop began in 1951. Sergeant Charles E. Neuman and Constable John A. Mapes started the store on North Main Street in Shafter, CA. The two men were inspired to start a gift shop because they were frustrated with the lack of opportunity to buy gifts for friends and family members. They soon realized that they had an important role in the development of the department and decided to continue giving back to the community by stocking specialties such as police medals, dog tags, handcuffs, and balls. Today, Sergeant Neuman and Constable Mapes are long-time employees of the department and their memory will be deeply engraved into the gift shop's history.
Shafter is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 3,953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Joaquin Valley region. The town was founded in 1873 by Ezra Shafter and his wife Betsey Wright. His father had been born in nearby Bakersfield. In 1896, the Shafter family moved from Shafter to north Fresno and then to Hanford where they operated a sawmill until their death in 1922. In 1928, Ezra's grandson, Donald Atherton Shaffer moved to Shafter from Hanford and became its first mayor. He served two terms before dying in office in 1951. Donald Atherton Shaffer was buried at Mountain View Cemetery on October 2nd of that year

Shafter, California is a small town located in the Inland Empire of Southern California. The population was 7,841 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Upland District in San Bernardino County. Shafter was founded by Mormons in 1851 as a dry goods store and mercantile depot on the banks of the River Shafter. The town grew rapidly during the Gold Rush, and by 1860 it had outgrown its original site. A new downtown was built, and stores, hotels, and other businesses were erected along Elm Street between Third and Fourth Streets. A post office was established at Shafter in 1872, and growth continued until 1907 when it merged with nearby San Bernardino to form San Bernardino County. During World War II Shafter served as an air-base for fighter bombers from nearby Mt. Wilson Air Force Base. Afterward, many of the buildings in downtown were used as storage or housing units until they were razed in the early 1970s to make way for new development. Today much of what once characterized Shafter has been replaced by modern day developments such as shopping malls and schools; however some sections including Elm Street remain primarily occupied by Victorian homes dating back to before incorporation into San Bernardino County. lighthouse keepers live onsite while their Limehouse Lighthouse undergoes restoration which will bring it back into operation following completion next year
