One of the first businesses to do so was a grocery store called The Grapes. They started selling coffee from local roasters and began using local beans. Coffee in Shafter, California began as a small town in the Central Valley. In the early 1800s, coffee was considered a valuable commodity and was grown near the town. In 1868, two men from Shafter founded the first coffee plantation in what is now El Sobrante County. The men named their farm "Shafter" after their hometown of Sheffield, England. Coffee was not popular in America until after World War II when it became popularized by soldiers returning home to enjoy this rich national export.

Shafter is a small, rural town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 1,821 as of the 2010 census. It is located about 50 miles east of Fresno and about 25 miles west of Stockton. The community was founded in 1868 by John Shafter, a Mormon settler from Oregon. In 1870, the Shafter Post Office opened and remained open until 1971. The first store in Shafter was built on Main Street in 1874. It was Jens Jensen's Store that became the nucleus around which local farmers developed their businesses over time. By 1916, there were two general stores, one run by Mrs. Clements and one by Capt A M Selfridge; four restaurants/bars; twelve livestock barns; five churches (with services twice daily); twenty-six schools (grades K-12); six mutual aid societies (including three banks) and twelve lodges for both men and women with an estimated membership of 2,500 people total during World War I. This growth led to increased traffic to and from Shafter through Route 66 and other routes passing through the community including Interstate 5 south to Fresno while also providing access to water supplies found only a few miles away via the Kern River at numerous mills along its course

Coffee was an important part of this trade, and some of the earliest references to coffee beans and brewing techniques appear in ancient Egyptian tombs. In 1828, Italian explorer Alessandro de Cesare named a location in present-day Ethiopia Kaffa Bey, after his friend and fellow explorer Giovanni da Kaffa. De Cesare had traveled through much of eastern Africa during his exploration, and he noted that there were many different types of plants found there which he believed could be used for tea or coffee. Coffee first reached Europe by sea in 1795 when Portuguese sailors brought sacks of beans ashore on their ship Anjou while they were traveling from India to Portugal. The bean was not yet roasted but it was soon recognized as a valuable commodity due to its high quality. In the 1830s, French traders also began importing coffee into Europe, and by 1840 coffees had spread throughout most of Western Europe. In 1845, Swiss chemist Peter Schlumberger developed a method for finely pulping the beans so that they would have a more fine texture. This process allowed him to develop what is now known as slow roast coffee. However, Schlumberger's invention did not become popular until well into the 20th century because it required more time and effort to produce good results than other methods at that time. As a result, many cafes chose instead to continue using traditional methods such as roasting whole beans on site or grinding them fresh before serving. Throughout the 19th century, technological advances led to new ways of brewing coffeebeans – including automatic brewers which operated without any human intervention; french press machines which produced drip-style coffee with less water content than American presses; Japanese koka mills which ground whole Beans directly into drinks; and espresso machines which turned water (and sometimes milk) into espresso shots or lattes

The Arab world has long been a center of coffee production, with countries such as Egypt, Lebanon and Turkey being the primary producers. The first recorded mention of coffee in Europe is from 1492. Coffee was grown mainly in Arabia and North Africa, with some beans exported to Europe. In 1846, Dutch traders were the first Europeans to visit Java and noticed the peculiar smell of coffee. They named the drink Java-water, which was later shortened to Java coffee. The first espresso machine was built in 1888 by Angelo Di Lello in Italy. Coffee had not yet been discovered as an addictive stimulant like cocaine or heroin and it took many years for espresso machines to become popularized throughout most parts of the world. In 1896, Italian inventor Luigi Bezzuoli constructed the first automatic espresso machine that could be ordered at any café or bar. By 1912, all over the world there were Automatic Espresso Machines serving various types of coffee including lungo (long) roasts and Americano (light).

Shafter, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 693 at the 2010 census. The community takes its name from General George Shafter, who served as an advisor to President Theodore Roosevelt during World War I and later became a U.S. Senator from New York. Shafter first appeared on maps in 1853 when it was named for Captain John Waddell Shaffer of the United States Navy's schooner Enterprise which had landed there on July 4th of that year according to local legend. In 1875, Shafter received placer goldmining claims from Felix Sengle and others and soon becoming one of the most successful gold mines in California. By 1912 Shafter had become a ghost town with only a few hundred residents remaining due to overwork by the mine owners and competition from more lucrative finds elsewhere in Kern County. However, things changed after World War II when many American soldiers returned home and found their old mining towns being abandoned again like Shafter. They started a new life hereabouts planting gardens and rebuilding homes using materials they could get locally such asadobe logs and corrugated iron sheeting taken down from old copper smelters nearby which still stands today as part of the town's architecture. Today, despite never having much commercial activity going on outside of agriculture or tourism (the only other sectors), Shafford continues to thrive thanks to its unique history which has made it a popular tourist destination for those interested in early America or Kern County history in general

Shafter, California was founded in 1859 by George Shafter and his wife Anna Maria. It became a town in 1871. The Shaftesbury Mine was opened here in 1881 and produced over $2 million worth of silver ore.
