When the United States Air Force deployed a gift to Shasta Lake, California in 1949, it was an occasion that would be remembered for many years. That year, the USAF sent 2 C-47s with a shipment of military supplies and equipment to help the local community during World War II. The planes arrived at Shasta Lake on December 6th and unloaded their crates of supplies. Over time, some items were replaced or upgraded but the USAF's gift to Shasta Lake will always be remembered as one of history. The C-47s had been modified by the U.S Army Signal Corps and they were equipped with new radios and antennas to improve communications between different branches of the military. One of these radios was used by Captain Harry Koppenheimer who was commanding officer of Squadron 514 at McCoy Field when he received orders from General George Marshall ordering him to provide air support for Operation Dragoon which was code name for the amphibious landing operation that took place on July 9th, 1945 in Japan. Since Shasta Lake was not within range of any Allied airfields during World War II, Captain Koppenheimer decided to send his squadron's aircraft into orbit instead. This experimentation with high altitude flying allowed them to carry out reconnaissance flights over Japan without being detected by Japanese interceptors and helped American forces learn more about their enemy while they were fighting him in close quarters. The RAF also contributed its own unit to Operation Bluejacket which was conducted on August 25th – 26th 1945 near Tokyo Bay. These raids resulting in damage or destruction against important Japanese targets brought great embarrassment to Japan which caused her war effort To falter; however, it did longitudinally enable American planners knowledge about Japanese industrial capacity so that later strategic bombing campaigns could be tailored better according TO their needs
