The Shasta Lake Air National Guard Station was established on November 15, 1942 as the 1st Bombardment Wing of the California Air National Guard. It was activated on February 6, 1943 and became a flying training unit at Sacramento Army Air Field. The wing operated B-24s from that airfield until it closed in 1945. On October 18, 1947, the 1st Bombardment Wing (Medium) was activated at Davis-Monthan AFB in Arizona and became responsible fordesignating all United StatesAAF Bomber Commands worldwide as "1st Bombardment Wing (Medium)''. The wing moved to MacDill AFB in Florida on December 16, 1948 and began operations with Boeing B-47 Stratojet bombers. In 1951, the wing began providing training for USAF fighter pilots under the command of First Lieutenant Colonel John Pembroke. On May 8, 1953, Pembroke became deputy commander of 1st Bombardment Wing (Heavy). In 1957-1958 an experimental program called "Operation Arrowhead" was initiated which aimed to improve United States strategic bomber capabilities by using McDonnell Douglas F4H/50 and Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft. This program resulted in the purchase of over 100 McDonnell Douglas F4H/50s and Lockheed C-130 Starlites for use by 1st Bombardment Wing (Heavy). The first operational flights were made from MacDill AFB on July 5, 1958; thus beginning what would be known as the "McDonnell Douglas era" of 1st BG Hts
Shasta Lake is a large, deep body of water located in the Sacramento Valley, about sixty miles east of Sacramento. It was formed by two mountain ranges that collided, and the resulting depression continues to be enlarged by uplift and subsidence. The surface area is twenty-eight square miles, but it contains an area of more than one thousand acres. The lake has a maximum depth of ninety yards and a width of three quarters of a mile. It is fed by five small rivers: the Siskiyou, the Oroville, the Yuba, the Clearwater, and the American River. The first people who lived near Shasta Lake were Native Americans who hunted game around its shores. They built their villages on low hills nearby in order to avoid being seen by enemies. When white men came to California in 1849 they found this landscape virgin and decided to settle here. For a long time Shasta Lake was used as an animal watering place for traveling troops on their way to battle in Mexico City or other important places up north. Later it became home to numerous summer homes for wealthy Californians looking out over the beautiful valley while vacationing in Northern California or Nevada

Shasta Lake is a large, deep body of water located in the Central Valley of California. The lake was created by the mainstem Shasta River flowing through the Thousand Lakes National Recreation Area. The name "Shasta" comes from two Native American words, meaning "place where trees grow" and "watershed." The original site for the recreation area was on an old missionbuilt bluff overlooking the lake. Today, there are more than 20 miles of hiking trails that connect Shasta Lake with other national parks and forests in Yosemite National Park and Kings Canyon National Park. The first Europeans to visit Shasta Lake were Spanish missionaries who traveled through the region in 1820-21. They named one of the smaller lakes in their area San Francisco de la Plata (Santa Clara) because it looked like this body of water. When they arrived at what is now Shasta Lake they found it had several small islands and a great deal of sandbars and shoals. In 1825, Lieutenant George Vancouver discovered and mapped Puget Sound which would eventually make up most of Washington state; he called this new land British Columbia because he thought this country might be able to support such a large population. It wasn't until 1862 that Captain David Griffiths explored Charley's Bayou onshore near present day Redding when he realized there may be gold deposits near Belknap Hills Dam on Shasta Lakeshae River due to its location between those hills and Sacramento County, California (now part of Sacramento). In 1865-66 Captain John Sutter sailed his ship North Dakota into what is now central California while seeking mineral rights for himself along with others interested in exploiting these new riches including General James Hutton who became famous for discovering oil reserves off Alberta, Canada in 1879. On July 24th 1870 US Commodore Perry anchored his squadron at sea off Point Reyes Peninsula after conducting combat during Mexican War off Vera Cruz Island against Mexico under General Anaconda as part of Operation Neptune's Spear covering California coast from Baja California east to Trinity Bay crowning Gold Rush era achievement during summer months.. Commodore Perry returned to port June 8th 1871 having looted Californios' treasury worth $4 million dollars! Aftermath: Commodore Perry implicated as war criminals by Mexican government
