Shasta Lake is located in northern California, on the border of Oregon and Nevada. The name comes from Shasta, a small stream that flows through the lake. It was first populated by Native Americans, who named it for a tree in the area called the Shasta Apple Tree. In 1859, prospectors discovered gold near Shasta Lake and began to irrigate the land around it in order to produce crops. By 1865, over 50 miles of irrigation canals had been built around Shasta Lake and its surrounding hills. After years of growth and development, the town of Redding was established on the shores of Shasta Lake in 1875. The town grew quickly due to its location and services; it became one of Northern California's most important towns during the 19th century. The town was destroyed by fire in 1911, but was rebuilt soon afterward. When World War II started, Redding became one of several military installations along with Camp Carson and Yuma Proving Grounds within California's Central Valley region. The town saw continued growth during postwar years as people began to move into the area for jobs in agriculture or industry. In 1970, Redding merged with other nearby towns to form Modesto; however, it remained an independent municipality until 1992 when it joined Redding County as part of that county's enlarged population. Today, Modesto is one of Northern California's most populous cities and has experienced significant economic growth since 2000s - making it an attractive place to live and work.
