Shasta Lake is located in the California state of Shasta County. It is a reservoir on the right bank of the Sacramento River. The surface area of Shasta Lake is 192 acres, and it impounds 3,000 acre-feet (100 km3) of water. The first Europeans to visit Shasta Lake were members of the party led by Captain John Benton in 1825. They named it after General George Armstrong Custer's regiment, which was quartered at Fort Laramie during that year. In 1826, lumbermens from Redding began to cut down trees around the edge of the lake for use as logs on their farmsteads near present-day Shingle Springs. A few years later, a group of men from Stockton built a boat landing on the east shore for boating and fishing purposes. This landing became known as White Rock Beach because white rock was used to build that part of White Rock Landing about 1900. In 1847, residents of Redding petitioned county sheriff Michael Fenton to create a park around Shasta Lake with an open space for public assembly and recreation. On May 25, 1850, Fenton granted their request and designated portions of what are now central Rohnert Park and northbound Umpqua Valley as part of the park system he had created six years earlier. The park system grew rapidly; within 10 years it included over 4 square miles (10 km2) including much of today's downtown Redding
