In 1850, Captain Fenton discovered what appears to have been coal reserves near present-day El Sobrante (now part of Santa Rosa), but no other mines were discovered until 1862 when James Hutton found coal blocks about southeast of present-day Redding Township across from today's town Beginnings beach.. In 1863 American miners discovered copper deposits along what is now called Main Street in Belchertown, east of today's town Belchertown Beach.. In 1865 General Order No 1 was issued by Governor Phillip ordering all non-native Californians not to enter any private property without written consent from owners or operators.. This order led to increased competition between American and non-native mine owners for access to resources such as coal and silver.. Because many people did not have permission to enter private land, mining operations continued even though production stopped soon afterwards.. Today Shasta Lake remains mainly a recreational spot with fishing being its mainstay; however commercial fishing does occur around several smaller lakes nearby including Butte Creek ( northwest) and Lick Creek (southeast).
