Shasta Lake is located in Siskiyou County, California, and has been home to humans for at least 10,000 years. The name Shasta Lake comes from the indigenous word shastan which means “a body of water where there is a willows”. The first Europeans to visit Shasta Lake were members of the Spanish expedition led by Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. They named the lake after one of their own: San Francisco de los Padres, who had founded San Francisco in 1749. The first permanent settlements near Shasta Lake were made by fur traders during the 18th century. By 1850, about 100 people lived on Shasta Lake and around it. In 1853, a small post office was established at Willow Creek on the south side of Shasta Lake. A store was built next door in1855 and became known as the “Willow Cottage Post Office” because it served as an inn and meeting place for local farmers and businessmen. In 1865, a large fire burned across much of Northern California; portions of Siskiyou County including Shasta Lakeshore were spared but much damage was done to homes, businesses and infrastructure. The fire destroyed most of what remains today of those early pioneer days on Shastan Lake – likely due to a combination of arson (or poor construction) as well as experimental farming practices that quickly went out-of-control following the fire). The land surrounding present-day Shasta Lakeshore was acquired by United States government via Treaty Of Tordesillas in 1847 when Spain ceded all its North American possessions east of Mexico to America without giving up its claims to parts of Baja California Peninsula (including modern day Sonora). After many years dithering over who should possess this valuable piece of land – especially given that no one wanted it because there wasn’t anything good growing on it! – President James K Polk finally signed legislation acquiring 1/3rds interest in ranching leases covering present day Siskiyou County from Juan Manuel Lopez y Mota through his brother Silas Wright Powell Sr., with leave from US General Edmund Kirbyburn who commanded Mexican forces occupying Southern Californias during that time period – thus creating Rancho La Brea along with other properties within what are now Ventura County and northern Los Angeles County today! This acquisition gave immense impetus to development around present-day Shastan Lakeshore & elsewhere within what we know now as Siskiyou & Butte Counties; things started happening fast & decisively here! A survey conducted by George Wickersham Backus between 1890-1892 showed that irrigation systems capable of raising crops near present day Santa Clara Dam had become available throughout Northwestern California but they did not yet reach even parts connecting these valleys into Sacramento Valley or Alameda Valley (& although some new canal systems had been constructed since then) This lack thereof didn’t go unnoticed by promoters eager for more fertile lands closer to markets; conflicts began brewing soon afterwards over who would get this newly created bounty! Ultimately it would be Chico operation Springwater Nursery Co., starting operations just upstream from current day Redwood City before expanding rapidly downstream into areas currently occupied by Soquel Lagoon National Wildlife Refuge
Shasta Lake is a large body of water located in the East Bay of Sacramento, California. The name Shasta means “ Place where the salmon flow” in the local language. Shasta Lake was formed by two main river systems combined: the North Fork Mono River and the South Fork Chowchilla River. The North Fork Mono River flowed east-northeast and turned south near Menlo Park before joining the Central Valley to form Shasta Lake. The South Fork Chowchilla River flowed west-southwest and joined the North Fork Mono just north of Redding. The lake was originally about 375 feet deep but it has since decreased in depth by about 25 feet due to drifting ice, changes in altitude, and flooding from rainfall events such as recent floods on November 17th and February 14th that filled parts of between Redding and Stockton with over 100 inches of rain within 24 hours!
