In 1871, prospectors found good gold prospects at Shasta Lake and began exploring it with small teams. By 1877, they had developed an operation large enough to start producing gold dust commercially. But luck changed when John Doolittle became captain of United States Airways Flight 11 which flew over Siskiyou County on November 17th 1927 while en route from Oakland Municipal Airport to San Francisco International Airport; he sighted some valuable deposits high up in the mountains above Siskiyou County that led him to believe that more gold could be found there than anywhere else in California
