The California National Guard was first organized in 1851. The unit was called the Volunteer Infantry and it served as a militia force during the Mexican-American War. In 1865, the National Guard was disbanded and its members were reorganized into companies. The company system continued to be used until 1892 when it was phased out in favor of battalion levels. In 1932, the National Guard was reactivated and became an infantry regiment under the command of the Department of Defense. It remained an infantry Regiment through World War II and then transitioned to become a support regiment during that war. After World War II, the National Guard served as a reserve unit until it was dissolved in 1960. Since 1962, the California National Guard has been providing guard services within Shasta Lake Area communities through their units stationed at Camp Roberts and Shasta Lakeside Airport. These units have also provided detachments to various other areas throughout Northern California. The statewide ceremonial function for state guard members is held annually on Memorial Day at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco’s Twin Peaks neighborhood overlooking Market Street where parade participants from all over Northern California march down Market Street accompanied by marching band and Drum & Bugle Corps contingents from several different counties across Northern California
