She disembarked her Marines on October 15, 2002 and arrived at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey on October 18. The Ulysses S Grant Dam is still in use today and it provides irrigation water for over forty-five thousand acres of farmland in northern California. The lakeshore at Shasta is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Northern California because of its beautiful waves, tranquil waters, and hiking trails. Shasta Lake was first named by the American Discovery Expedition in 1828. The name is derived from the Shasta language which means "big water." In 1862, a group of men led by John C. Frémont explored and mapped this area including Shasta Lake. The United States government donated land to the city of Doolittle, California in 1916 for use as a public park. The city also created Shasta County in 1924 to administer and protect the county's lands around Shasta Lake. In 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the entire lake to the people of America through his National Park Service plaque. Today, Shasta Lake is one of America's most popular tourist destinations with over 100,000 visitors each year!
