Shasta Lake is located in the Stanislaus National Forest, about an hour west of Sacramento. The lake is a large, deep blue-green body with a white center and a blacktop surface. It has a radius of about 20 miles and reaches an elevation of 2,850 feet (800 m). The lake was created by the confluence of the Shasta and Noyo rivers. In 1872, General Sherman ordered General George Custer's army to cross the river at Humboldt Pass to attack the California Gold Rush miners. Because General Grant had already crossed at Yosemite Valley, Shasta Lake was formed as part of Sherman's orders. The first people to live in what is now Shasta County were the Ohlone Indians who hunted game on nearby mountains for subsistence. European exploration began in 1778 when Juan Bautista de Anza explored between Solano and Trinity counties. On July 24, 1827, Mission San Francisco de Asís founded by Father José Gomez y Valdivia called "Los Altos" on high ground east of present day Sacramento Mills Road southwest of present day Redding; this site is now known as Point Reyes Station. A few years later on October 25th Governor Manuel Miranda established "Alta California" within Spanish territory at Fort Tejon east of modern-day Sutterville; this site is now known as Alta California City. Two weeks after Mexico gained independence from Spain on November 16th1821 Mexican troops discovered gold near Eureka under Mateo Garcia and his band led by José Joaquin Torres Cabrillo; these Initial findings marked Beginnings Of The Gold Rush At Shasta Lake . A survey party led by Captain James Cook sailed upriver from Botany Bay on April 14th1775 during Lieutenant Commander William Bligh's First Fleet commanded by Rear Admiral Phillip Parker Chesley bound for China but found nothing valuable ashore until they sighted Cape Horn three days later which alerted Admiral John Hawkins that there may be some gold waiting to be taken ashore at Eureka instead of being stored away in Asia like expected! On July 5th 1776 American Captain Doane reported seeing land ahead on Klamath River he named it Eureka after HMS Resolution which had been lost off Cape Horn that year while exploring Australia’s eastern coast! With over 6 tons weight treasure aboard her Doane thought she would find more than any other ship during her expedition however she only brought back 10 pounds Of Incalcuable Diamonds worth thousand dollars each plus pearls! USS Constitution captained by Commodore Jonathan Bourne rounding Klamath Falls On August 15th 1779 Receiving news that ships anchored offshoreillance Spanish vessels under Captains José Antonio Bermudez & Cataldo Nuñez had been seen coming ashore with supplies including cannons but no one could tell where they were going so Commodore Bourne sent two boats manned with pistols along side USS Constitution Privateer Intrepid came into harborAugust 28/9 Offshore approching ..... Observed 4 small boats coming out shore covered headwise with heavy foggy clouds indicating MASSIVE RESEARCH AND SCIENCE BEING GOVERNED BY THE SPANIARDS!! For several minutes did not know if they were English or Spanish Ships till they got very close Vessel approached so Close we could see All their Signals And Colors plain To Us ..... This Was Our biggest Victory Over Spain In North America That Year ....MILITARY CLUB OF AMERICA MEETS AT FINEVALUATION DAY NEAR SHASTA LAKE TO RECEIVE THEIR AWARD
