The Sierra Madre National Monument is a United States National Monument located in central California, south of Yosemite National Park. The monument was established on November 16, 1919 and covers an area of 417,000 acres (1,500 km2). The name comes from the Mexican word for "the redwoods." Sierra Madre is one of five national monuments that make up the California National Monument System. The other four are the Gila Wilderness, Joshua Tree Forest, Mojave Desert and Angeles Mountains. Together they cover 1 million acres (3,200 km2) and have a combined enrollment of more than 200,000 people. They are part of the larger greater Western United StatesNational Monument system which also includes sites like Yellowstone National Park and Bryce Canyon NP in Utah; Mount Rushmore NP in Wyoming; Alaskan Natives Historic District in North Dakota; and Organ Pipe Cactus NP near Phoenix AZ among others. The eastern side of the range has a drier climate with oak trees endemic to this region while the western side is higher precipitation zone with fir trees. There are many types of wildlife found here including lions, deer, bears, wild horses and pronghorns as well as some rare plants such as Joshua tree lilies orchids that can only be found here. When viewed from space you can see how Yosemite Valley stretched out below you before cutting off abruptly at Half Dome while miles wide stretches of empty desert open up on both sides of Interstate 5 between San Bernardino County in California to the east and Imperial County to the west across Nevada - making it one vast Empty Quarter! In 1848, the first element of what would become Sierra Madre was discovered in a place now known as San Pedro. The area was part of Rancho Rinconada, which was granted to Manuel Nieto in 1827 by Governor José Joaquín Alvarado. A rancho is a land grant and it was not until 1862 that the name "Sierra Madre" became attached to the entire region.
