Sierra Madre is a small, isolated community in the Mojave Desert of California. It was settled by Californio mountain men in the 1830s and is now one of the most visited places in Los Angeles County. The community has a population of around 100 people and includes a library, post office, probation officer's office, and fire station. It is also home to some interesting history including an early 19th century gold mine and rancho at Sinkhole Lake. The first Europeans to visit Sierra Madre were Spanish traders in 1828. They named the area San Bernardino de los Bajos because they thought it would be warm there year-round. In 1846, Mexican soldiers under General Antonio López de Santa Anna discovered gold near Sinkhole Lake while raiding settlements in the area. A group of Americano miners followedMexican troops to find the gold but only found dirt and rocks instead of valuable minerals. The miners decided to abandon their search for gold rather than be part of an American Indian battle that could have ended with them getting killed or enslaved. In 1870, Anglo farmers began settling in Sierra Madre after finding land north of San Bernardino on which to build homes. Most hands worked cattle or farming while a few took up mining as well due to poor prospects for extracting valuable minerals from nearby hillsides (). By 1920, there were only 10 residents living hereabouts (). In 1940, during World War II., Sierra Madre became one of three towns located withinLOS ANGELES COUNTY limits (along with Long Beach and Garden Grove) as resultof President Roosevelt's Executive Order 9394 (). Today, Sierra Madre has more than 100 residents (), making it one of easternLos Angeles' most diverse communities (). A post office was established at Sierra Madre on March 2nd 1865 (), serving residents until 1916 (). The first US mail service between these towns arrived via stagecoach on October 15th 1896 (). On December 6th 1912 both San Bernardino City Hall (now downtown LA) and Diablo Canyon National Monument were dedicated by President Woodrow Wilson as part of his Sonoran Desert Campaign . On May 25th 1915 two storekeepers from Sacramento working for Southern Pacific Railway decided to start a general store at Sinkhole Lake after seeing no other stores available within five miles () . A gas station was started adjacent to this store soon afterwards () . This store lasted until 1928 when it burned down due to overuse by customers (). A blacksmith shop opened on July 1st 1929 () which lasted until 1951 when it closed also because too much heat came out during welding operations (. There are still references to this blacksmith shop today .) One reason why Sierra Madre had so many businesses open throughout its history may have been its close proximity to Interstate 5 which made transportation easy for those living hereabouts . Another factor may have been that silver Mining activities occurred around here starting back before Mexicans even landed in California (); thus providing goods and services necessary for local business owners

In 1876 Yosemite National Park was created from parts of Kings Canyon National Park and Tuolumne Meadows National Monument when Yosemite National Park became a national park following President Ulysses S Grant’s Executive Order 9962 on July 8th, 1876

The first post office for the area was founded in 1856. In 1868, the United States built the Presidio of San Francisco on top of what is now Mount Davidson. The U.S. military used the site as a training ground during World War II and later turned it into a research station focused on developing methods to find oil and gas reserves in California's Central Valley.
