Sierra Madre is a small, rural town in San Bernardino County, California, located about 20 miles southeast of Los Angeles. It was founded by American pioneers in 1848 as Encinal Rancho de las Pulgas. The townsites of Sierra Madre and Sun Valley were consolidated into the new town on February 14, 1952. In 1957, the name was changed to Sierra Madre del Norte after land acquisition made through the federally sponsored California State Lands Project. At that time it included most of what is now Orange County. The townsite of Sun Valley was abandoned in 1971 and became an unincorporated community called Sunrise Valley. Today, Sierra Madre is a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 149.7 people as of 2010,[1] its largest ZIP code being 92334.[2] It experiences significant dry periods due to the nearby Mojave Desert and annual rains from the Mono Fault Zone which forms part of the eastern edge of Yosemite National Park east of Lake Tahoe. The CDP covers 612 square miles (1,830 km2).[3][4][5] Most residents are farmers or ranchers who also commute to jobs in downtown Los Angeles or other urban areas; however there are some small businesses and professional services associated with its high desert setting. The area has some Ofqual Mining District operations: several thousand metric tons/year (MT) worth copper and gold are exported from surface mines at Anza Fields near Crescent City but these exports have ceased since 2000 because of environmental concerns about lead mining activity nearby

Sierra Madre is a small, unincorporated community located in Mono County, California. The name Sierra Madre comes from the Spanish word "sierra" meaning mountains and "madre" meaning mother. The first Europeans to visit what is now Mono County were the Franciscan missionaries who arrived in 1769. They named the area La Provincia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores because of the nuns who lived there. In 1821, Mexico won independence from Spain and formed its own country, called Mexican America. The area that includes present-day Mono County was part of Mexican America until 1848 when it was partitioned among the United States, Canada, and Mexico as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1854, gold was discovered in nearby Quartz Valley and soon after came settlers to this region looking for new land to ranch or mine. By 1870, there were over 1,000 people living in Sierra Madre. In 1875, a post office was established at Sierra Madre with A.J. MacMillan as Postmaster General; it served until 1915 when it moved to Lomita. A small fire destroyed most of the town on January 15th 1896 while residents were using their ovens for heat during wintertime; however no one was injured or lost any property as a result of this fire.Lopez (2005), pgs 139-140 In 1907 an irrigation canal was constructed through portions of Mono county by George Hearst which irrigated much needed crops such as citrus fruits and grapes in addition to providing water for farming communities near his rancho Malibu Creek Rancho Piruña y Guevara near Coyote Valley;Hearst papers Winchester Collection.
