The Sierra Madre National Guard was organized on November 9, 1912. It was the first national guard organization in California. The original purpose of the Sierra Madre National Guard was to provide a militia for law enforcement and public defense. On October 5, 1916, the battalion became an infantry battalion and was redesignated as the 137th Infantry Battalion on September 15, 1918. On July 1, 1951, the 137th Infantry Battalion became part of the California National Guard and was assigned to Headquarters Company (Guerilla Warfare) at Camp Pendleton Naval Base in San Diego County. Inactivated on September 30, 1957. Inactivated again on February 6, 1960 when all infantry battalions were reassigned to Continental Army Command's 10th Mountain Division in support of United States invasion of Cuba
