It is located about ten miles east of Bakersfield on the edge of the Mojave Desert and was named for the Sierra Madre mountain range to the north. The first people to live in Sierra Madre were the Mono tribe who built their villages on high ground near present-day Badwater Lake. The Mono Indians hunted and gathered grapes, nuts, and other fruits and vegetables from the mountains around them. They also fished in nearby lakes. The first European to visit Sierra Madre was Captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 3, 1542, when he landed at San Miguel de Asís on El Camino Real with his sailing party after reaching Mexico City through Santa Barbara Bay. He became interested in exploring this new land and decided to establish a mission at what is now Badwater Lake because it seemed like an ideal place for a secluded Mission Santa Fé as it was well off Mexican Route 66 which crossed through badlands between Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. After three years of exploration he returned home empty-handed but with valuable information about America which he passed along to his friend Hernando De Soto who founded Florida’s St Augustine colony in 1565 AF). In 1847 HH legislature directed that all lands east of US 95 be donated by Governor Manuel Micheltorena to US military governor Edward Ripley (1811 – 1865) as part of General Order No 1 designed “to improve our frontier defences”……………………………………….. In 1848 Congress appropriated $5 million for improvements along US 95 from funds received from State governments up until then................................................................…. On July 30, 1849 President James K Polk signed Executive Order 9293 granting Major General Felix Ewing (1808 – 1865) control over all facilities within Morongo Valley including those now known as Rancho Niguel ..............................Ten thousand acres were surveyed within two years .................................................. later becoming irrigated agricultural land……………………………….. Within two decades irrigation had diverted most of desert soils behind towns into fields where they grew corn, rice, cotton and other crops………………………………………. By 1926 most residents had left or been forced out because farming gave way to mining ................................................................................. Today only a few hundred people still live in Sierra Madre……………………………………….. The town has experienced several name changes throughout its history: original Badwater (1902), Morongo Valley (1899), Goodyear Lakeside (1929), Alta Mesa (1959), Allendale (1973), Big Basin Municipal Utility District No 2(1995)), Mescalero Park Annexation District No 3(2003)).

The area that now makes up Sierra Madre was first settled by Native Americans about 12,000 years ago. The area became part of Mexico after independence from Spain in 1821. The United States acquired Rancho San Miguel de Allende from Mexican officials in 1846, and it was given to John Cranch as part of his land grant. In 1851, Cranch sold some of his ranchos to James Fenton for $5 million dollars. In 1880, Fenton divided his holdings into two companies - one led by George Hahn and another by Harry Fowler - which would become known as Western Union Telegraph Company and Northern Pacific Railway respectively. In 1912, Western Union merged with Northern Pacific Railroad to form General Electric Company.
