The Signal Hill Arsenal, located in the city of San Francisco, was founded in 1854 by Captain George Armstrong Custer. The arsenal was initially used for the storage of artillery and munitions. It soon became a center for military equipment and technology research. In 1916, the armament depot was renamed the Signal Hill Arsenal Museum after Colonel Hiram A. Evans, who served as Commandant of the armaments depot from 1908 to 1914. The museum is open to the public every day from 9am to 4pm. In 1932, General Joseph J. Pershing designated Signal Hill as one of four installations in California responsible for providing air defense against Japan’s massive air attack on Pearl Harbor that summer night. The following year, Lieutenant General James Fenton arrived at Signal Hill with his headquarters and staff to take over responsibility for air defense in California. By 1942, signal hill had become one of five cross-country radar stations operated by Army Air Forces in California under Major General Curtis Eaker’s command. After World War II ended, signal hill reverted back to its original role as an armaments depot before being mothballed in 1957. In 1984, it reopened as part of the downtown San Francisco Armory redevelopment project which also included construction of a new museum adjacent to the old armaments Depot building on Geary Street between Market and First Streets (now called “Signal Hill Plaza”). The museum is open daily 9am-4pm except holidays when it is closed Mondays through Thursdays during school weeks; 10am-1pm on Fridays during school weeks; 2pm-5pm on Saturdays; and 12pm-3pm on Sundays (except Christmas). Signal Hill is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. Signal Hill is located on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway east of Chico. It is within Chico Unified School District. The community was founded as a post office in 1887 by James Fenton and his wife Emeline Skelton Fenton. The first postmaster was Hiram Laughlin. In 1904, the name changed to Signal Hill after the hill that overlooks it from which signals were sent to other stations in the area during gold rush days. In 1957, Signal Hill became an incorporated town when it annexed part of Chico. In 1984, it merged with neighboring towns of Topeka and Santa Fe to form a new consolidated city government called "Chico-Topeka-Santa Fe". As of 2006, Signal Hill had a population of 2,521 people living in 907 housing units; all but one are single family homes or condos built since 2000 as part of the town's growth following various business expansions and investments by businesses including Google Fiber (now Google Street View), Nest Learning Thermostats, ABC News' KQED station (now KNTV), SB Nation's Sacramento Kings basketball team (now Sacramento Republic FC) and several other smaller businesses along Atchison Road over time. The army's deployment gift history goes back to World War I. In that conflict, the United StatesArmy and its allies pulled off a stunning victory against an all-out European military campaign. By 1919, theU.S.Army had become one of the world's largest militaries with over 166,000 soldiers in uniform. In order to commemorate this momentous achievement,the Army created the Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Museum in Arlington National Cemetery in 1921. This museum is open to the public and contains more than 1 million items representing America's military history from Colonial times to World War II. The museum also offers a wide variety of educational opportunities for visitors including tours of its historic buildings and galleries.

Signal Hill was founded in 1847 by Captain James K. Polk and his wife, Lucy. The first post office at Signal Hill was established in 1854. The town became a railroad junction in the 1870s, and soon developed into a small farming community with a few businesses and residences. By the early 20th century, Signal Hill had become an agricultural center with several large fruit orchards and a small herd of cows. In 1922, the town incorporated as a city under the name of Santa Clara County. One year later, it changed its name to Signal Hill again due to objections from some residents who felt that it resembled "Sienna" on Calaveras Mountain. In 1951, the city annexed neighboring unincorporated communities of Maywood and Throopville and changed its name back to Santa Clara County once again. Today, Signal Hill is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Silicon Valley with numerous Japanese Americans, Korean Americans, Latinos, Asians and African Americans residing there. The population has grown to over 100 thousand people since 2000 thanks to housing development along Interstate 880 (the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Corridor), new restaurants and businesses popping up throughout the downtown area (such as IHOP), new elementary schools being built throughout Santa Clara County (including KIPP School District) as well as growth in tech startups such as Facebook Messenger Signal Hill began as an agricultural community located near present-day San Jose City Hall on what is now Utopia Road SE., about two miles east of I-880 & three miles south of Eastern Avenue NE., between Nobles Road & Redding Ave.. There were no telephone lines then nor were there any electricity or water services; henceforth all communication came through horseback or foot messenger service which continued until 1958 when signal hill received its first television signals! The original homestead for Captain James K Polk's family was located on what is now Third Street SW., just north of present day Utopia Road SE.. Mrs Polk also resided here for awhile before moving down Mission Creek Rd./Utopia Rd NW towards today's Palo Alto/Redwood City borders where she finally acquired permanent residency sometime around 1847 after unsuccessfully trying to establish herself elsewhere within our current boundaries In 1852 Captain Polk donated land including what is now Fourth Street SW., Seventh Avenue NE., First Street NW., Second Street NE., Third Street SW., Fourth Street SSE.), Fifth Avenue NE (), Sixth Street NNE(), Seventh Avenue NE (), Eighth Avenue EAST() & Ninth Streets WEST(). This property was bounded by First St/Mission Creek Rd./Utopia Rd NW | Second St/Palo Alto Ave./Redwood City Blvd| Third St/Eastern Ave./Santa Clara Cowy| Fourth St/Utopia Rd SE(). With this donation deed we MAPED out this entire tract including modern day SignalHill using today's GPS coordinates! It should be noted that at this time our area lay mostly within present day Hayward areas - so much so that local historian Donny Weintraub has named part of Hayward Upper Diria Hills after Capt Polk himself! A map drawn up circa 1860 shows that real estate prices would have increased significantly due primarily to railroads developing nearby - additional acreage for farming would have been necessary if Railroad traffic had not caused demand for more space . However wagon trade still took place via foot mail service until 1888 when Telegraph Line Railroad tracks reached our hamlet . shortly thereafter both passenger trains stopped traveling thru our locale altogether making access difficult even today ! !!! Note: According to John Ahern’s great book “Saddleback Ranch: California History from Prehistory Through Modern Times” many young men working for various Southern Pacific Railway companies learned sign language while stationed at Signal Hill during World War II] After years of negotiation talks resulted in purchase by Mr Wm Bemis [of Red Bluff], owner Molineux Development Company leased hooker plat from Capt JKPolk on Feb 1st 1865 [sic 1865]. This transaction included 400 acres west side mission creek road [sic]and east side redding avenue [sic]near modern day 5th street southwestern corner
In 1858, the first post office was established on Signal Hill. The name of the hill was chosen because it is a major landmark in downtown San Francisco and is known for its tall Peaks of signal Hill. In 1872, the first store on Signal Hill was opened. By 1890, there were six stores on Signal Hill. In 1915, a hospital was built on Signal Hill and in 1927, an electric streetcar line ran down the hill from Market Street to Treasure Island.
