Signal Hill is a small town located in the Inyo County area of California. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. Signal Hill is located on Signal Hill Rd., about 12 miles east of downtown Yuma and 15 miles west of Truth or Consequences. The first Europeans to see Signal Hill were Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and his party who camped there on December 7, 1769. A mission was founded there in 1821 by Father José Francisco Ortega y Gasset and named Santa Fe Mission after Mount San Jacinto in Texas which had been sighted by Spanish explorers in 1762-64. The Japanese bombed the town during World War II, resulting in more than 30% loss of life, including 69% of the population. In 1963, Amoco Refinery owners George Kaiser and Robert Witteman donated land for a new high school that would serve as an insult to nearby Truth or Consequences High School (the only school within 5 miles). The name "Signal Hill" originated from the sound made when trains passed through the refinery property. After years of construction and testing, it opened its doors to students on September 24, 1965. All students attending this school were required to ride their bikes up and down hill each day before going into campus buildings! Due to low enrollment at Signal Hill High School over time and lack of interest from local businesses due to what they perceived as a lack of competition; many classes were held outside of regular days during non-peak hours which led to decreased instruction resources available for other classes thereby causing lower grades overall for these students which eventually impacted graduation rates
