Signal Hill, California is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 23,521 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Northern California by population. The name comes from the sound of waves crashing against the shoreline. In 1892, Signal Hill Coffee Company was founded by J.C. Whitney and Elisha Graves with $1 worth of coffee beans brought over on horseback from San Francisco Bay. In 1916, Signal Hill Coffee became one of two first commercial coffee roasters in Contra Costa County when it established a small roastery on North Point Road in Richmond Heights with its own equipment and staff. By 1951, Signal Hill had acquired its own large plantation house on Highland Avenue where it continued to produce coffee until 1986 when it closed down due to environmental disaster caused by methylmercury contamination of water supplies used for irrigation and production of agricultural crops near the plant site

Signal Hill is a small, unincorporated community located in the city of San Francisco, California. It is adjacent to both the Golden Gate Bridge and Interstate 80. The Signal Hill name comes from two ridges that run along the eastern edge of town. Signal Hill was originally a military post established in 1853 by Colonel John Edward Houghtaling. The post was abandoned in 1857 and never regained its former importance until it was reactivated as a civil airfield in 1927. Today, Signal Hill is home to a few hundred residents who use its small shops and restaurants as their primary source of income. The first permanent settler at Signal Hill was George Washington Dyer, who arrived in 1848. Dyer built his house on the corner of First Avenue and Navy Street. He also built a barn, stable, and chicken coop on what is now Pacific Boulevard. By 1850, there were about 25 residents living at Signal Hill. In 1853, Colonel John Edward Houghtaling became the first resident of Signal Hill when he moved from nearby Midway Point to establish it as an agricultural post with land holdings totaling . Houghtaling used his post to monitor reports of merchant ships traversing the Strait of Magellan while they waited for clearance from Spanish authorities- an important task during those days before photography became possible. From here he could watch vessels entering or leaving San Francisco Bay without having to go close enough to see them directly. After years of use as an agricultural station, which included growing crops such as cotton and wheat (the latter being sent down the peninsula for market), signal hill passed into private hands in 1914 when it was sold by Captain James Payson Cooke to Jens Jensen (a Norwegian immigrant). Captain Cooke had come overland from Norway via Oregon City where he had met Jensen while working on a ranch near Stockton shortly after arriving in California in 1858." In 1928 signal hill became part of San Francisco Airfield #1 after it reopened following World War I due to wartime need for civilian flight training services for American servicemen stationed overseas; however signal hill continued operate day-and-night under military ownership until 1943 when control reverted back to civilians following World War II demilitarization efforts led by Mayor Kenwood Olson

Signal Hill is a small town in the San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. It is located on Signal Mountain and was founded in 1869 by Mormon settlers as a station on the Central Pacific Railroad. The name comes from the hilltop location of the original post office and store. The first permanent settler in Signal Hill was John Sutter, who arrived in 1869 and built his own cabin near present-day Fair Oaks. By 1875, there were eleven people living in Signal Hill; six of them were Mormons. Farming began to take hold early on and by 1905, Signal Hill had a population of ninety-five residents. In 1916, construction began on what would become the town hall and courthouse which were completed two years later. In 1930, when Interstate 10 crossed through central San Bernardino County, Signal Hill became one of several communities along its route that were bypassed by the highway. As a result of this decision, many businesses closed down and many residents lost their jobs; however, some managed to keep their homes while they awaited developments that ultimately came about around Interstate 10's passage through their area. In 1984–1985 federal funds were allocated to build several new roads within central San Bernardino County specifically for bypassing Signal Hill; these projects included I-10 East Freeway (now Interstate 15), US 101/Calaveras Highway (now CA 95) east of town center and I-10 west of town center. This bypass caused serious damage to local homes as well as streetscape appearance which still exists today due to traffic impacts from I-10 East Freeway/I-15/CA 95 interchange movements over time
Signal Hill was founded in 1875 by John C. Fremont and his wife, Pershing Heights. The bluff is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco and overlooks the Golden Gate Bridge. Signal Hill was home to a number of famous residents including Levi Strauss and Co., entrepreneur George Westinghouse, author J.D. Salinger, and musician Joe Bonamassa.
