Signal Hill, California is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The name "Signal Hill" was given to it by the United States Signal Corps because of the numerous signal towers that are located in and around the town. The first signal tower was built in 1885 and it continued to be used until 1941. The last time it was used was during World War II when it was used as a training ground for USAAF pilots. In 1955, a new signal tower was built and it continues to be used today. The first store in Signal Hill opened its doors on May 2, 1886. It became an important shopping center for local farmers and their families because it offered a wide variety of goods including groceries, hardware, lumber, cattle, eggs, milk products and other agricultural items. The store burned down in 1903 but another store opened soon afterwards called "The Faire". It continued to operate until 1942 when it also caught on fire. The first post office in Signal Hill opened on December 12, 1888. It served as a drop-off point for mail for farmers who delivered their product directly to their homes or businesses. The post office also allowed residents to buy stamps which they could use to send letters and packages upriver into Northern California. In 1951, a new post office building was erected and it continues to serve as the present day Post Office property today. One of the most significant events that took place in Signal Hill occurred on October 5th of 1898 when 150 brave American soldiers from Company K (3rd Cavalry) were honorably discharged from Fort Sill after serving with distinction during the Spanish-American War at Santiago de Cuba - making them one of only two units of cavalry stationed at Fort Sill at that time! Signal Hill is located in Inyo County, California and was founded in 1868. The Signal Hill Post Office was established on December 12, 1868, and remained in operation until it closed on October 1, 1971. The Signal Hill Cemetery opened in 1881 and remains the only graveyard in Inyo County. The first industry to come to Signal Hill was agriculture. A large meadow near the present-day intersection of Old Highway 666 and McClure Boulevard was used for raising hay, pigs, cattle and other animals. By 1886 there were also three small stores serving the townspeople: one operated by Pemberton Bros., a woolen manufacturer; another by Waddell & Co., grocerykeepers; and a third by Fenton & Sons, grocers. A second industry to come to Signal Hill was oil production. On July 3, 1889, an oil well called Old Well No. 2a been drilled near the present-day intersection of Old Highway 666 and McClure Boulevard; this well proved successful and produced over $5 million worth of oil during its lifetime! However, due to high winds that year (the same winds that later caused rapid erosion at Signal Hill), about $2 million worth of production from the well went unpublished! In 1906 a group of businessmen interested in developing an electric power plant came to Signal Hill from San Francisco with their proposal for a new company called Westinghouse Electric Company Limited. After much deliberation among the business community (including some who objected vociferously because they saw no reason why any such company should be based east of Sacramento), Westinghouse Electric Company Limited became a reality on January 1st 1907 with the signing of a deed by Mayor Hildebrandt (himself then vice president) authorizing construction of what would become known as "The White House". signal hill chinese restaurant
