Signal Hill is a small community located in the San Joaquin Valley of California, about 25 miles northeast of Fresno. It was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who fought in the American Civil War and died at Battle of Reno. Signal Hill was first settled in 1859 by Mormon pioneers. The first post office was established at Signal Hill on May 9, 1860. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to production of agricultural products such as cotton, potatoes, and flour. In 1916 Signal Hill became an incorporated city and has since experienced rapid growth and development. Today Signal Hill is a vibrant community with a rich history that is reflective of its current location and situation within the San Joaquin Valley. The earliest recorded inhabitants of Signal Hill were Native Americans who inhabited the area before European settlers arrived in what is now California. These early settlers were likely associated with the Yokuts tribe because they lived near present-day Fresno and had access to natural resources such as water supplies, timberlands, and agriculture that would be important to later waves of settlers. By 1800, Spanish traders had discovered new goldfields in Northern California which led to increased travel throughout the region by natives and Europeans alike; this discovery initiated a period of dramatic population growth for both Native Americans and Europeans living in what is now California (Ferguson 1961). The first post office at Signal Hill was established on May 9, 1860 pursuant to an act passed by Congress on March 15th (5 U.S.C § 103). At that time only residents living within Oregon City or Crescent City could vote due to their distance from Sacramento County (thus making it ineligible for federal representation). On February 11th 1861 two men under contract by Mr J W Horsfall reached Eagle Ford Canyon near modern day Porterville; this initial discovery marked one significant milestone toward completing America’s telegraph network! With this key discovery came increased scientific curiosity regardingAmerica’s newest nationhood! The town was founded in 1878 by Orson Welles and his father, Hiram Welles, as a summer home for their family. The first post office was established in 1879, and the first store opened in 1880. In 1902, the town passed to California's newly formed public school system, and by 1914 it had only 9 residents. In 1923, the Signal Hill Methodist Church was built on Signal Hill Road. It served as the town's center until 1949 when a new church was built on Wilshire Boulevard. Signal Hill is now an all-ages neighborhood with several parks and shops near its center.
