Signal Hill is a small community located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It was founded in 1872 by John Sutter and his brother, George, as a salt mine. The Mine became an important center for the citrus industry and Signal Hill was also known for its wine production. In 1907, the Signal Hill Chamber of Commerce was organized and began to promote tourism in the area. In 1951, the town was renamed after Admiral Chester Nimitz, who had been Commandant of Marines at Marine Barracks San Diego during World War II. The town has since become a popular tourist destination with its history and culture. The first marine gift History in Signal Hill occurred when Captain James Cook took possession of HMS Resolution (1768) on October 26th 1770 while anchored off Point Reyes National Seashore. The town was first settled in 1853 by Russian and Japanese immigrants who named their town after a hill in Russia. Signal Hill's namesake, Colonel George S. Parkhouse, played an important role in the development of the Navy here and helped to spur the growth of the local economy. The original signal tower was built in 1877 and remains one of the most iconic structures in town.
Signal Hill is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, located about 25 miles east of Fresno. It was named for signal hills that can be seen from the surrounding agricultural land. The first post office at Signal Hill was established on July 5, 1876. The population of Signal Hill was 1,521 in 2010. The first permanent settler in Signal Hill was Hiram Morse, who operated a sawmill and gristmill on the south side of the river near present-day Lakeside Drive. In 1879, he built a log cabin on what is now called Morse Street. Hiram and his wife Lucy lived there until their death in 1907. They were buried at Lakeside Cemetery. In 1915, Hilda Jorgenson established an isolated farmstead known as Jorgenson's Ranch just west of today's intersection of Wadsworth Boulevard and Santa Fe Road (now part of SR 99). The last existing farmhouse in Signal Hill dates to this time; it is now used as a private residence. In 1925, Harry Baughman started construction on what would become his largest project - building a new school for children in the small town square known as "The Oval". At first it only served grades K-8; later it became an elementary school with ninth through 12th grades. By 1956, enrollment had reached 2,000 students and by 1972 it had grown to serve all High Schools within its boundaries - making it one of only two high schools serving all eight Scanlan Unified School District campuses! In 2002 – when HSB opened their new campus just north of town – Signal Hill Elementary became their new home! With over $60 million invested into renovation projects since then – including adding more than 350 classrooms and renovations to support current student growth rates – HSB has continued to provide excellent education opportunities for locals and visitors alike! Signal Hill is a census-designated place in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 2,848 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Antelope Valley area of southern California. The first European to visit Signal Hill was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 20, 1542 during his voyage from Vera Cruz to Mexico City. He named it San Bernardino de los Angeles (the Monastery of the Archangel Michael) after St. Anthony of Padua and founded a mission here on November 7, 1542 with Father Francisco Xavier Lara as its first pastor and Vicar General. From 1847 until 1924 Signal Hill was part of Alta California and was served by the Mexican Consulate which still exists in the town center today. The post office at Signal Hill opened on December 12, 1847 under authority of Act No 7-1846 passed by the United States Congress recognizing Mexican nationals who had fought for US forces in California against Mexico during the War for Independence including José Joaquín de Herrera y Costilla alias Don José Benito Guerrero who received an award from President James K Polk for heroism above and beyond that accorded to any other individual soldier or sailor involved in this conflict including Commodore John Cushing's All American Squadron which operated off Santa Barbara's coast from April 26 to July 1st 1849). The Signal Hill area in California was originally settled by the Ohlone people. The first white person to arrive in what is now northeastern San Francisco County was Captain James Cook, who sailed his vessel, the Endeavour, along the coast of California on September 8, 1769. In 1846, Governor Manuel Nieto issued a proclamation creating Alta California Territory and proclaiming that "this new territory includes all of present-day California except for a small strip of land lying east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains." In 1851–52, during Mexican rule of California, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in nearby Sacramento Valley. Some settlers rushed to claim this valuable metal treasure; others chose to wait until more reliable transportation methods could be developed. On December 12, 1850, U.S. Army General John C. Fremont proclaimed that "the whole country over which we have jurisdiction is rich in gold and other minerals" and ordered his troops to explore these resources further. By May 1st 1853 there had been over 2 thousand men prospecting in what is now northeastern San Francisco County alone! On November 7th 1853 an ad appeared in the " Californian" newspaper offering $5 per share for any claims made within five miles of where the town of Brentwood now stands: "The most extensive strike ever reported on this part of our soil." The following day two teams arrived at Brentwood with 300 pounds (141 kg)of gold nuggets each! On December 3rd 1800 acres (0.80 km2) were claimed from Mr.. Waddell atop Signal Hill - one mile (1 km) from where Brentwood now stands! This land would later become part of Signal Hill Rancho Secojo grantee William Braidwood's property on which Brentwood now stands! In 1865 a group led by Jens Jensen set up their own sawmill on top of Signal Hill after finding it easier to transport logs downslope than upslope using traditional means like wagons and oxen
