The National Guard of the United States of America was first organized on February 14, 1861. The first national guard units were called into service during the American Civil War to protect the Union forces and provide a military force for local self-defense. In 1864, the Guards were renamed in honor of George Armstrong Custer and his battle at Little Big Horn. The current National Guard system was established by Executive Order 9296 on November 15, 1990. Signal Hill is home to one of the oldest National Guard units in California, The 1st Battalion, California Regiment (NGC) was organized in 1892 as part of Repatriation Company A from Signal Hill. In 1903, NGC moved from its original location to Fort Point on San Francisco Bay and became Company B with headquarters at Fort Mason. On July 3, 1916 NGC was redesignated as The 1st Battalion (National Guard), California Regiment (NGC). Since then it has been stationed at various locations throughout California before returning to Signal Hill in 2000 as Headquarters & Headquarters Company (HHC) 2nd Battalion (National Guard). In 1944, during World War II when Japan had occupied Guam and Wake Island, elements of the U.S. Army's 9th Infantry Division made an amphibious landing on Guam without warning or warning their Japanese counterparts who thought they were withdrawing after successful Battle of Saipan against very strong Japanese resistance forces which numbered more than seventy thousand men! This event is generally considered to be one of the most daring battlefield occurrences in World War II where Allied troops successfully invaded an enemy territory unannounced by that country's government! On December 17th 1941 USS Missouri sunk five German submarines off Kwajalein Atoll following a three day long air campaign flown by Seeley Service USAAF pilots led by Lieutenant Colonel James Halsey Jr., Commander Task Force 382 This action typified naval aircraft operations during World War II providing added value over land-based air activities for friendly forces operating along Asia-Pacific waters

Signal Hill is located in San Bernardino County, California and is a small town of about 10,000 people. The community was founded in 1887 by the Signal Hill Lumber Company. Signal Hill is known for its signal towers which are used as radar and navigation systems. The community also has a large limestone quarry which provides materials for building the towers and other infrastructure. The quarry closed in 2002 but part of it is still open to visit. The Signal Hill Lumber Company was founded by four brothers who wereLoggers from England. They started the company with three trucks and a sawmill on their family property in 1887. The company grew quickly and soon had a sawmill, store, post office, telephone line, and two railroad tracks under its belt. In 1903 they built their first tower - an observation tower to watch over their lumberyard below. By 1916 they had eight signal towers spread across their property: four on high hills overlooking the town center, two on either side of the main street (the "High Street" of today), one at an airport (now Signal Hill Airport), one just east of downtown (behind what's now the KFC restaurant), and one near where Interstate 5 crosses the road near present day I-5 exit 131 (now called US 101). From these high signals they could communicate with all over San Bernardino County to warn residents of danger or to announce major events like lighthouses or elections! One common message they sent out was "This Is Your Life!". In 1932 they abandoned their high signals because of budget cuts but kept running their stores until 1938 when they stopped production altogether due to World War II rationing restrictions. However, many retain fond memories of those days including seeing President Franklin D Roosevelt arrive at nearby Sanger Airport for his meeting with war manufacturers on May 7th 1940 using his personal car! Afterward he took a train down into town to have dinner at Mrs Elmira's house before coming back upcountry again for his next appearance! It was during this time that SignalsHillbecamea Historic Site! In 1951 it reopened as Airmont High School with students from nearby Redlands Elementary School.. In 1974 it became Sahlen's Valley Museum after being donated by Mrs Elmira Sahlen who served as museum director from 1966-1978 Today much of what made Signal Hill so special has been lost in time but visitors can still walk around the original neighborhoods including Main Street Shopping Center where you can buy local produce grown right here in town! And if you're feeling adventurous there are plenty of trails available too including an easy hike up Mtn View Drive which leads you past several interesting old mill ruins while offering stunning views over SignalHillLakeandMountsSan Berryshnabrookie & Mount Baldy!
