Signal Hill, California is a small town located in Fresno County, California. It is bordered by the cities of Prineville and Madera to the south; Rocklin to the east; and Perris to the north. The population was 1,512 at the 2000 census. Signal Hill was founded in 1892 by Amos Eaton and his family. The first post office at Signal Hill opened in 1893. The community was named after a hill in nearby San Leandro which had been sighted by early settlers as they traveled through Fresno County on their way to explore new land. The first school in Signal Hill was built on Elm Street in 1894. In 1903, the town voted to incorporation and became a city under Mayor John Q. Goodwin Jr.. The original signal tower still stands today (now used as an art gallery) and is one of only two remaining examples of pre-war commercial architecture in central California. When it opened, signal hill's signal system consisted of 12 bells that could be heard up to 100 miles away! Today, signals can still be heard from this location using modern technology; however, only 5 bells are operational due to vandalism or neglect! In 1951, when California ratified its own state constitution, Signal Hill became part of the newly formed Fresno County government with jurisdiction over all unincorporated areas within its borders! This change made Signal Hill one of the most politically active communities within Fresno County – it has always been an advocate for county-wide services and initiatives not just inside its municipal boundaries! One notable example occurred during the 1995–1996 fiscal year when citizens successfully lobbied for passage of Proposition 209 which addresses discrimination against gay individuals statewide! Prior thereto, SignalHill had already long sponsored a pride parade each year outside City Hall on Grand Avenue where participants would march down Market Street towards Stonewall Inn – this parade ceased after Proposition 209 passed but continues annually now as San Francisco’s Pride Parade!! Today Signal Hill is an economically vibrant community with many businesses including restaurants, strip malls/mall stores and office complexes sprouting up along El Centro Boulevard corridor between Rocklin Boulevard & Interstate 805 past downtown (including several high-end shops), Lake Tahoe Blvd., Sanger Road - home of Yosemite National Park - & much more !!! Many residents commute into larger metropolitan areas such as Fresno or Stockton either via public transportation or personal carspooling while others enjoy access to both city amenities (such as hospitals/medical centers) as well as rural farmland 10 minutes away !!!
