The Simi Valley area was first settled by the Ohlone people in the late 18th century. The first recorded European sighting of the Simi Valley area is from April 8, 1769, when Lieutenant James Cook saw a large island off the coast of Northern California. The land that now makes up the Simi Valley area was purchased by Spanish settlers in 1821 and named Rancho San Carlos de Atascadero. In 1846, after Mexico won its independence from Spain, Mexican citizens decided to name their new province Simi because of all of the San Carlos hills near Rancho Atascadero. In 1850, a group of Englishman founded an agricultural town called Colusa on what is now part of Ventura County. In 1861, following Gold Rush fever in California, many men and women left San Carlos for Sacramento to seek wealth and gold. Many more came afterember 1st to join them but much like today’s population growth rates there were no schools or infrastructure established until later years. On January 4th 1863, during American Civil War General John J. Pershing ordered his unit known as “The Iron Brigade” to march through Simi Valley on their way to battle at Palo Alto Bridge over the Santa Clara River During World War II many Japanese Americans were interned here during 1942-1945 under various terms such as substandard housing conditions and forced labor camps known as Angel Island Naval Air Facility (AIAF) which housed 2 million people between 1941-1944 according to historian Naomi Kawase who wrote about it in her book "A People Who Lived". After 1945 most Japanese Americans returned home but some still live in rural areas outside Calaveras County today
