Today, Simi Valley continues to be an important center for agriculture with crops such as almonds, grapes, wheat and cotton products being produced as well as services such as medical care and law enforcement.

Simi Valley is a small town in Southern California, located on the east side of the San Joaquin Hills. The name means "valley of the Simis" in Italian, referring to the Native American tribe that once lived there. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Simi Valley were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and Francisco Vásquez de Coronado, who explored parts of California in 1542 and 1543 respectively. In 1848, prospectors discovered gold near the present-day town of Simi Valley, and soon thereafter businesses began to grow up around mining operations. By 1853, more than 10 businesses had sprung up hereabouts, making it one of the most bustling towns in California. After years of growth and development, Gold Rush era Simi Valley quickly became a center for agriculture and small-scale industry. However, during World War II (1939-1945), much activity took place at nearby Naval Air Station Miramar (later known as Naval Air Station Vandenberg) which led to increased population and traffic density in Simi Valley. During this time period other important institutions also sprang up such as University Of California - Riverside (UCR) and Northern Arizona University (NAU). Today's economy is based largely on education with a focus on research within various technological fields; however, manufacturing has long been an important facet of this community's history as well.
The Simi Valley community began as a small farmstead on the east side of theSimi Hills, in 1876. The first post office was established in 1877, and the first school was built in 1879. By 1888, the population had reached 100 people. A sawmill and gristmill were built in 1889, and a lumberyard opened in 1901. In 1912, a railroad line was extended through Simi Valley to Chico, California; this helped to spur development around Simi Valley. The town of Simi Valley grew rapidly during World War II due to the need for materials for military production. After the war ended, growth slowed as more suburban homes were erected. However, by 1990, Simsville had become one of Southern California's largest cities with over 1 million residents.
