In the early 1900s, Coast Guard gift history in Simi Valley, California was very different. There was no Coast Guard at that time and the first efforts to raise money for the agency were through fundraising games and dances. The first Coast Guard station in Simi Valley was established on October 1, 1895. The idea of a coast guard station in Simi Valley originated with Captain John Waddell who served as Commandant of the First Battalion San Francisco Bay Battalion from 1887-1891. Upon his departure from duty with the battalion, Captain Waddell recommended construction of a coast guard station inSimi Valley specifically for the purpose of providing law enforcement services on local beaches and waterways. On October 1, 1895, Captain John Waddell's recommendation was realized when Governor George Hearn signed legislation establishing the Simi County Sheriff's Department which would eventually become the Simi Valley Police Department. The first officers appointed to this new department were Captains James Dolan and Samuel Armstrong. Shortly thereafter, another bill passed by Gov. Hearn created a new state police force known as "The California State Patrol" which would eventually be absorbed into the Coast Guard on July 1, 1942. During World War II (1939-1945), it was not possible for American soldiers stationed overseas to receive gifts such as radios or toys because these items were considered military equipment subject to confiscation by Axis forces under Japanese control during war time (see also: Pearl Harbor). Accordingly, all gifts sent home during peacetime were turned over to local authorities upon return from deployment which often included some interesting items like bicycles or model trains belonging to service members stationed at sea or ashore in Southern California (and sometimes beyond!). Nevertheless, there is evidence that certain individuals within both government and private sectors throughout Simi Valley contributed towards helping support America's military effort during World War II including Captain John Waddell who played an important role leading up to troop deployment at San Francisco Bay Naval Base; Mr. Harry Hechtman who donated a large number of radios which became models available through Military surplus stores; Mrs. Alice Nordenwald who generously contributed several boxes of ammunition; Father Edward Fenton who supplied clothing and food parcels directlyto American troops fighting abroad; Mrs. Florence Goodrich who made donations of canned goods and other supplies earmarked for troops overseas; Mrs . Clarence Goudreau whose business interests extended beyond fashioning period pieces into colorful wartime tributes such as GI’s hats shaped like Snoopy wearing Victory Lapel Rings -an amazing accomplishment considering most people could not afford even one! The Coast Guard is a national emergency service that provides law enforcement and rescue services in the US waters. The Coast Guard was created on May 15, 1915 as the United States Naval Reserve. It has a total of 6,000 members who serve in both civilian and military branches. The Coast Guard’s mission is to protect America’s oceans and coasts from marine life or human activity, whether it be through rescuing sailors lost at sea, providing security for ports and shipping lanes, or monitoring coastline conditions for possible future coastal emergencies. With its motto “Away From Anybody But You’re All I Need To Be Glad We're Here Together,” the Coast Guard does an excellent job of reinforcing community bonds between Americans. In 1872, John Sutter built his own sawmill and gristmill in what is now downtown Simi Valley. The mill produced rails for Southern California's new railroad network. In 1923, when Hollywood began production on pictures such as Sunset Boulevard and Warner Bros.' Casablanca, parts of Simi Valley became important filming locations for movies including For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943), High Society (1948), Andalusia (1951), The Three Musketeers (1959), Drumsline Rider (1960) and Top Gun (1986). Many famous people have lived or worked in Simi Valley over time: Bob Hope, Cary Grant, Jerry Lewis and Clint Eastwood are just a few examples.
