Simi Valley is a small town located in Ventura County, California. The population was 8,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and has a rich history dating back to the 1800s. Simi Valley was originally known as Rancho San Jose Mexican land grant given to José Manuel Nieto by Governor Manuel Micheltorena in 1879. The name "Simi" means "ranch" or "farm". In 1903, the United States acquired title to Rancho Santa Anita from Mexican landowners and renamed it Simi Valley after its then-owner, Agnes Smedley Dodge. The townsite was annexed by Ventura in 1907. The first post office opened in Simi on October 20, 1878 with Pgkrs Wm Henson as first deputy clerk. By 1901, there were six post offices in Simi Valley: four serving residents of the town itself and two for neighboring villages of La Romita and Carpinteria. The last post office closed on December 31, 1951 due to population growth within Ventura County and automation of mail services within county government. The first person born in Simi Valley was James Smedley who lived there from 1865-1867 when he was five years old with his father John Smedley sr.. His parents homesteaded near what is now downtown Simi before moving westward intoreal estate development around 1900 which allowed them to purchase 6th St.-northwest corner of Ventura Blvd., east side of Stevenson Rd., where they built their home (now an art museum) called “Smedley House” on April 12 1906 terms set out between James Sr., Mrs Jane Burchill (wife of early settler George Burchill), Eldridge Pickering (not related but descendant),with architect Harry Stern Architects Incorporated dated November 2 1906 deed setting out boundaries for lot upon property purchased including lots southside 9th Ave & east side 3rd St thence southwesterly along 7th Ave SW #2 blocks northward Lot fronts Residence frontages are shown on map below lots sold are also shown . Simi Valley is a small city in Ventura County, California, located about an hour east of Los Angeles on the I-5 freeway. The population was 20,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles area. The first people to live in Simi Valley were the Tongva Indians who inhabited the valley from ancient times. The Tongva and other indigenous peoples began cultivating crops and fishing in what is now Simi Valley around AD 1000. Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was founded in 1781 by Father José de Urquiza and Mission Santa Clara de Asís was founded in 1810 by Francisco Garza y Castro. In 1853, Governor Manuel Nieto designated Simi Valley as one of four townships within Ventura County for development into a town colony under state jurisdiction with right of vote and defense (the others being Olmsted Falls, Thousand Oaks, and Fillmore). In 1907, industrialists Elias Howe and George Eastman started developing new methods for producing film negatives using chemicals that would be shipped back across the ocean to America by railcar. Howe named his company Eastman Kodak after his old friend and business partner Samuel Eastman (1821-1912), one of America's most notable capitalists and philanthropists. Kodak became one of postwar America's leading technology companies before it went bankrupt in 2006. Simi Valley played a significant role during World War II as a munitions production center due to its proximity to both Hollywood Boulevard on the west side of town and Naval Base El Toro on Yorba Linda Peninsula just east of town on Ventura Harbor. Many high-ranking military personnel lived or visited Simi Valley while they were stationed at El Toro or Hollywood Airport northwest of town where they could commute directly to their units without stopping at any other towns or villages along their route.
