Simi Valley is located in Ventura County, California and was one of the most important agricultural areas in the United States. The valley became well known for its grapes, apples, and other produce. The area was also a center for ranching and farming during the 1800s. The first Europeans to visit Simi Valley were Spanish explorers who traversed the region in 1602. The area that now includes Simi Valley was part of Rancho San Buenaventura Rey de Wara (Rancho Santa Anita) which was given to Juan Bautista Alvarado by Spain in 1769. In 1821, Mexican General Manuel Armijo purchased Rancho San Buenaventura from Don José Maria de la Vega y Costilla. However, it remained part of Mexico until it was ceded to the United States on November 15, 1848 when California became anounced as a territory of the United States. In 1850, John Sutter arrived at Simi Valley with his brother-in-law family and began developing land south of present day Ventura Boulevard. By 1860, Sutter had founded what would become Northern Pacific Railroad Company’s Monterey Division Headquarters at present day Fillmore Street/Highway 101 intersection just north of downtown Ventura (now Agoura Hills). This location would remain key throughout railroad history as Nordhoff & Hawley’s seminal article “A History of Railroads – Their Development and Operation” published in 1915 presaged America’s railroads being built through Central California during this time period including Northern Pacific Railroad Company's Monterey Division Headquarters at Fillmore Street/Highway 101 intersection
The first Americans to visit Simi Valley were the Spanish in 1769. The area was part of Rancho San Tomas de la Victoria, which was granted to Manuel Nieto by Governor Felipe de Neve. In 1802, it became part of Alta California while Yolo County remained under Mexican rule. In 1846, when California became a United States territory, Simi Valley became part of Ventura County and the town of Ventura was founded on November 15, 1846. It would be renamed Monterey after Commodore John D. Stockton's exploratory voyage that foundered off the coast of Santa Barbara on October 25, 1847. That same year saw the opening of what is now incorporated as Alum Rock Cemetery in honor of local citizens who died during the Gold Rush era. On January 4, 1850, President Millard Fillmore signed General Order No. 12 ordering all troops in California to disperse and leave for their homes before winter set in; this order effectively ended the Mexican–American War and brought about increased Anglo immigration into California during that time period. On December 6th following hostilities had ended at Camp Emigrant near Sacramento,, Angelenos started streaming into Simi Valley looking for new opportunities and farmland in what is now eastern Ventura County (including parts of western Monterey). The early settlers were primarily Presbyterians from North Carolina who began building churches and schools in what is now central Simi Valley in 1850-1851; these structures remain some of today’s most recognizable landmarks within the community today including Four Corners Monument fame as well as Chaparral Hall Elementary School which also serves students from east central Ventura County neighboring Bakersfield Unified School District through Lakeport Union High School which opened its doors on September 20th 1959 with an enrollment exceeding 2200 students! Heinrich Wilhelm Treitschke arrived here with his family on July 10th 1870 from Prussia along with his brother Carl Wilhelm Schulz von Schweinfurt who had come overland via wagon route from Stuttgart Germany just prior to that date! He partnered up with Cesar Chavez later that year starting what would become known as “the Central AmericanLabor Mission” eventually becoming one of largest grassroots movements against racism/discrimination ever led by nonprofit organizations throughout America! The first post office here was established on October 5th 1861 when Wm Hargrave opened a general store at 3rd Street & Main Street; this store would remain open until 1865 when it moved to 8th Street & Main Street due to lack of space at 3rd & Main Streets.. By 1870 there were six businesses open inside or outside town limits serving residents including four banks plus two grocery stores providing goods and services needed by civilians and soldiers alike! With increasing numbers arriving daily & coming out specifically for groceries not only did prices drop but so too did quality since no one knew how reliable food could be kept long term here given short notice resources ran low constantly!! This also contributed to less cross contamination between different neighborhoods making life much easier for everyone involved both inside & outside town Limits!!
