Simi Valley is a small town in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 21,545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and is adjacent to Downtown Los Angeles on the south side of Ventura County and to downtown Santa Clarita on the north side. Simi Valley is also adjacent to Oxnard Lake on its east border and Toonee Hills on its west border. The first European settlers in Simi Valley were Spanish Franciscans who landed there in 1777 during the Mexican War. They named their new settlement after a place called San Vicente de la Paloma (St Vincent of Paul), which they had seen from above as they sailed up the Pacific Ocean from Mexico City. The original mission was destroyed by a fire in 1814 but again re-established in 1821 as Mission San Gabriel Arcangela with Juan Bautista Alvarado as head missionary. In 1847, following gold discovery at Serna Creek, American Americans began arrive here and soon established several businesses including butchering steer for local farmers and tanning hides for clothing manufacturing; cattle ranching became an important industry later too. After decades of growth and development led by such entrepreneurs as Averell Harriman, David Rockefeller and other business leaders, the town declined when commercial aviation took over transportation throughout much of Southern California during World War II; however it has since resumed some activities such as arts & crafts production and golfing that have brought it back into prominence economically. The Simi Valley area was first inhabited by the Ohlone people. The area was later divided among various Native American groups, including the Tongva and Chumash. In 1772, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo explored and reported a sighting of an island off the coast of Ventura County. In 1821, Mission San Antonio de Anza were founded in what is now Simi Valley. The town of Simi Valley was established in 1882 as a result of efforts to create a market for produce in central California.
