Military gift history in Simi Valley, California began with the arrival of American forces in 1849. The town was founded by brothers John and Edward Cady and their families on the edge of what is now Simi Valley. The Cady Ranch provided grazing land for cavalry horses and wagon trains that brought goods to San Bernardino County. In 1856, General George Crook assigned Major Augustus Baldwin to build a post near Simi Valley as part of his survey of California’s western border. The post served as a checkpoint between Mormon refugees arriving from Utah Territory and white settlers looking for land to ranch. In 1861, when American Civil War started, the United States military stationed at Simi Valley enlisted local residents in order to provide support. Several men from the town volunteered for duty in Company D of the 1st Battalion Santa Clara Regiment under Captain Fenton Swinson. On October 16th, 1861, after days of skirmishes and battle, General Crook ordered his unit into action against Confederate forces retreating from Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Private Albert Barnes became one of the first Americans killed during the war when he was slain by Confederate soldiers while trying to cross a riverine road near Tustin Creek Bridge on October 21st. Lieutenant Colonel James Hickey also died during this engagement; however, he is commemorated at nearby Mount Hickey (Hickey Hill). In 1892, George Thomson established his farmstead on what is now Roosevelt Boulevard near western edge of present-day Simi Valley after finding gold veins at nearby Phelps Gulch. In 1916, when Simi Valley became an incorporated town it had a population of 382 people; by 1940 that number had grown to 1,814 with plenty of room for growth thanks to new housing developments such as White Sands Ranch (1910), Sunland Park (1915), Highland Park (1920), and Westwood Village (1930). Wealthy residents built mansions such as Biltmore and Belvedere while others built smaller homes around their farms or businesses for employees or tourists visiting adjacent valleys like Malibu or Santa Monica. Many farmers followed through with plans to build hotels along both coasts due to increased visitation from travelers during World War II when military bases were located throughout Southern California including Simi Valley. The post-World War II boom ended abruptly in 1948 when president Harry S Truman announced that American troops would be withdrawn from all overseas areas effective September 2nd but they remained stationed at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro until December 15th before being withdrawn completely two weeks later pursuant to then-President Eisenhower's order ending GI Hirobums in Japan%20 Unlike most other towns which experienced limited economic activity during peacetime because soldiers were deployed elsewhere or because there wasn't any good reason not to have another hospital after World War II ended%, many small towns throughout Southern California struggled economically following the war because so many jobs went offshore with no corresponding jobs available here at home%. The Simi Valley, California area was first settled by Native Americans in the late eighteenth century. The first European to visit the area was Captain Juan Bautista de Anza who explored and charted the Simi River in 1795. The area became part of Rancho San Diego de Alcalá during the Mexican-American War of 1846. The American military burned down the Californian Mission Santa Clara in 1847 in order to create a road route through Mexico. In 1849, Rancho Los Alamos was founded on what is now Ocotillo Road. In 1865, another rancho, Calloway and Hitchcock, was established east of present day Ventura Boulevard on what is now Nashua Road. In 1868, Rancho Los Padres was founded adjacent to present day La Cañada Flintridge on what is now Hidden Hills Drive. On November 3rd, 1873, portions of RanchoSanta Anita were sold to George Hearst for $2 million dollars which made him one of California's wealthiest men
