The U.S. Navy has a long history in Simi Valley, California. The navy's presence in the community began with the arrival of USS Constitution in 1846. The ship was used as part of the local militia and during World War II it played an important role in helping to protect Simi Valley from Japanese attack. In 1951, the Constitutions were replaced by USS Enterprise which served until 1984 when it was decommissioned and sold for scrap. In 1984, USS Enterprise (CVN 65) was donated to the Simi Valley Naval Historical Foundation by its previous owner, the City of Ventura County. Enterprise served as a museum ship at Point Mugu Naval Base until 2004 when she was moved to Vallejo, California and placed into temporary storage before being finally scrapped in 2006. It is interesting to note that both Constitution and Enterprise were built in Simsbury Connecticut while Ventura County was founded in 1849. Simi Valley, California is located in the Simi Hills region of Ventura County. The town was founded in 1887 by John Sutter and his family. It became an incorporated municipality in 1958. The population of Simi Valley was 22,587 as of 2010. The largest employer in Simi Valley is Scripps Networks Interactive which has its headquarters there. Other major employers includehemispherical research firm Caltech, Encana Corporation and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The nearest airport is the Ontario International Airport about 25 miles northeast of town. The history of Simi Valley can be traced back to 1887 when John Sutter and his family started ranching on a piece of property they acquired from Rancho San Fernando de Atascadero in Ventura County. In 1888, Sutter named their community after himself, Simpsonvale (simile for "Valley"). By 1912, the population had reached 100 people and by 1915 it had grown to 350 people. In 1916 Sutter donated land to build a high school andangerous fire destroyed part of the original structure but new construction began soon after with classes starting on September 5th 1919. On May 8th 1920 Sutter gave another gift to the community when he donated land for a public library which would serve as a center for culture and education within the community (the first library west of Santa Clara). During World War II, Simi Valley played an important role due to its location at just off-ramps into Interstate 5 at Exit 169 where over 2 million tons of munitions were unloaded between 1941-1945 alone! Additionally, other industries that have come and gone through Simi Valley include farming ( sirian grapes became popular here), automotive manufacturing, real estate development including subdivisions such as Ramona Canyon Estates & Silver Lake Village (now known as Northridge), light manufacturing including phototypesetting during World War II before moving onto electronic products during post-war years; water resources; chemical production including several petrochemical plants until 1984 producing ethylene glycol; energy production including two oil wells until 1982; heavy industry such as shipbuilding until 1984 before giving way to small businesses such as homebuilders until 2001; all this activity has impacted not only how much ground floor retail space is available today but also downtown business districts like Midtown Shopping Center which has seen vacancy rates reach 50%. Today, many residents are active in their local government with seven city councillors representing Simi Valleys portion of Ventura County while additional members are elected at large statewide level via party affiliation rather than individual partisan representation ensuring that everyone who lives or works withinSimis valley has voice and equals opportunity for input into decisions made about our town’s future! Simi Valley is a small city in Ventura County, California, located about an hour's drive east of Los Angeles. The valley was first settled by Mexican and American pioneers who arrived during the Gold Rush in 1848. At its peak in the late 19th century it had a population of over 60,000 people. Today Simi Valley has a population of about 12,000 people and is one of the most ethnically diverse communities in Southern California. The city's history goes back to when Mexican and American settlers journeyed from northward into the valley during the Gold Rush era. The town was founded on September 24, 1848 by Captain William Halsey and his wife Julia Ward Howe as Nopalco Station on Rancho San Buenaventura south of today's Simi Valley City Hall. In 1850 Captain Halsey sold his share in the ranch to John Sutter for $2,500 (now worth over $100 million). In 1854 Sutter donated what is now downtown Simi Valley to the community as part of a land grant given him by Governor Manuel Nieto de la Vega y Pavón. On December 8, 1870, Simi Valley became part of Los Angeles County when it was severed from Ventura County.
The Simi Valley area was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1700s. The site of present-day Simi Valley was originally called Kishkoshtna, meaning "place where the willows grow." In 1836, the Mexican land grant of Rancho San Fernando was given to Antonio Palou, who renamed it County Pico. In 1859, part of Rancho Santa Fe de Cahuenga were donated to the Kiwanis Club due to its location at what is now Oxnard Boulevard. On February 24, 1870, a group of men from San Francisco known as The Forty Thieves set out from Sacramento on horseback with an invasion force in order to take over California. They were unsuccessful and returned home before getting too far into California. Over time, much of what is now Simi Valley came under American control with various boundary changes and acquisitions. In 1906, when Mexico lost its independence from Spain, many Mexicans left their homes in Simi Valley for the new country. Many pioneer families chose to stay and continue operations such as ranching and farming while others left for other parts of California or Mexico. After World War I ended in 1918, many farmers turned their attention towards citrus production which would soon become one of Simi Valley's most important industries. In 1949–1950 a large fire destroyed much of downtown Ventura County and led to the relocation of county government services several miles away at then-new Ventura County Regional Airport (now Van Nuys Airport). This event would also lead to the development around today's downtown Ventura full of office buildings and other commercial ventures that continue today
