Simi Valley is a small town in Ventura County, California, located about 25 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The population was 7,859 at the 2010 census. It is a agricultural region known for its corn and other grains, as well as its dairy products and wine production. The area that would become Simi Valley was first populated by the Tongva people in the early 1800s. They were driven out of their original homeland by settlers from Northern California who began to arrive in great numbers in the late 18th century. The first permanent settler in what would become Simi Valley was John Sutter, who came overland from Sacramento in 1799. He named his new land Rancho San Pascual after Padres Francisco de Anza (1746-1827), Governor of Alta California, and José Joaquín de Urquiza y Gasset (1768-1828), Captaincy General of Mexico province. In 1824, following Mexican independence from Spain, Rancho San Pascual became part of United States territory under Mexican rule. In 1851, James Fenton purchased all of modern-day Simi Valley from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $6 million dollars. This purchase set off a series of farming and ranching revolutions that would profoundly change the character and landscape of Simi Valley. For the next half century or so there was little change to the land around present day Simi Valley; however, farming methods changed significantly over this time period with advances in technology such as irrigation systems and canals networked throughout America which allowed large acreages to be farmed more efficiently than ever before. During World War II many Japanese American prisoners were held at nearby Fort Shafter until early 1945 when they were transferred to Camp Pendleton Naval Air Station near Seal Beach on Angel Island where they were treated humanely until released back into society
The Simi Valley area was first populated by the Chumash and the Hupa. The area was later discovered by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who named it San Miguel de Oviedo. In 1821, a party of Missionaries under Father Francisco Gomez arrived in the area and founded mission stations on various hills. Mission San Fernando Rey de las Vegas was built in 1824, and Mission Santa Isabel in 1828. In 1850, a post office called Simi Valley was established at the intersection of State Route 128 and County Route 601. The name changed to Simi Hills in 1955 when it became part of Soquel Union High School District.
