Solana Beach, California is a town in Sonoma County, California, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is located on both sides of the Solana Beach Pier in Pacifica Bay. The first European to sight and visit what is now Solana Beach was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 16, 1543. He named it San Miguel de la Jolla after his patron saint. In 1916 when US Naval Base Point Loma opened its doors for military operations it also created significant economic development including construction of several large warehouses used by Commander James Wickersham and other Navy personnel during World War II including Santa Anita Racetrack where race horses were trained for racing purposes and later sold to Hollywood studios or used as decoration on warships such as USS "Guadalupe" (LPD-5) during World War II while nearby Topanga State beach received national media attention due to its blond sandstone cliffs visible from Interstate 5 near Avalon Peninsula airport
