The town of Soledad, California was founded in 1849 by Don Carlos Marquez. The town was named after José Joaquín Cámpora, the governor of Baja California during the Mexican-American War. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln visited the town and decided to name it for his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln. The original post office was opened in 1870 and served as a transportation stop for wagon trains on their journey from Sacramento to Los Angeles. The first school in Soledad was established in 1871. In 1892, a railroad station was built in Soledad and became the terminus for passenger trains coming from various points south of San Francisco Bay. In 1912, the town voted to become an incorporated municipality and achieved this status two years later. On December 12th of that year,Soledad fire destroyed most of the downtown Business district including several stores and residences; however no one was killed or injured as a result of the fire. After a long and expensive rebuilding effort began almost immediately following the fire, Soledad’s new downtown shopping district emerged as one of Baja California’s most popular tourist destinations with its wide variety of shops and boutiques located within easy walking distance of each other. Today there are few reminders that old Soledad once thrived – aside from a small number of historical buildings located near central plaza which remains unchanged since its construction more than 150 years ago – but through history it has embodied many lessons about how resilient people can be when faced with adversity both physical (fire) and social (discrimination). For example: 1) Despite facing great loss due to fires throughout its history, even today communities such as Soledad continue to thrive due to their hard work ethic and resilience; 2) This same spirit is also evident when faced with challenges such as racism or discrimination; 3) Despite setbacks experienced during past eras, people are still able to overcome them through perseverance and creativity;
