The United States Army has a rich history in Soledad, California. The city was founded by American soldiers during the Mexican-American War on December 12, 1846. The first U.S. military post in the area was Fort Yuma, which opened in 1848. In 1860, General Kearny and his forces landed in California and established Camp Kearny near Soledad. In 1862, the 1st Battalion of California Volunteers (1st CV), led by Captain John Sutter arrived at Camp Kearny to help garrison the region during the Civil War. After the war ended, 1st CV disbanded and its members joined other units of the army such as 2nd Cavalry Regiment (2nd CAV) and 3rd Infantry Regiment (3rd I). At that time, there were no branch of the army located in Soledad County so soldiers from other counties served as volunteer cavalry for various campaigns throughout California’s Central Valley including Placer County Campaign in 1863; Mojave Desert Campaign in 1865; San Joaquin Valley Campaign in 1867; Oregon Country Campaign 1870-71; Nevada Expedition 1876-77; and Mojave Expedition 1880-81. In 1890, General Pershing ordered all U.S troops out of Mexico City following its occupation by Spanish troops under Governor Pico de la Hoz y Arellano. As a result of this operation known as “ Phillippine Expedition” many Americans left their homes behind to fight for America abroad against Spain’s continued rule over what would become known as Latin America through Operation Zephyr(). On January 8th, 1890 Colonel Edward Rucker relieved Major George Armstrong Custer with orders to establish an artillery battery at Rancho San Marcos east of Paso Robles Angeles Co., CA to support Filipino Independence efforts during Spanish American War Elephant campaign against Spanish defenders on February 15th - March 9th 1890 also known as Philippine Insurrection or Moro Rebellion campaign culminating on April 10thwhen Aguinaldo proclaimed himself President of Philippines after US Brigadier General Arthur MacArthur failed to enemy capture Manila Bay before its fall due to disease pandemic then called typhoid fever which ravaged Manila ). Aftermath US Marines purged remaining Moros from Leyte Gulf . This event is widely considered as one of greatest USA military accomplishments since WWI . A year later on October 5th1890 USS Chesapeake anchored off shore at Soledad Harbor while USS Monitor towed a supply convoy bound for Samar Island via Bataan Peninsula linking up with Rear Admiral Fenton Keyes's Squadron who had already landed there several weeks earlier disembarking thousands more American Soldiers along with Filipino Scouts and Marines under Commodore Dewey Bailey's command just days after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor while blockade runners were still sailing between Philippines & Hawaii waters transporting goods essential for war effort) Commodore Keyes sailed back home port Washington DD only to be replaced two days later by Rear Admiral Franklin Buchanan when Japan attacked Wake Island
