Soledad is a town in western San Francisco County, California. The population was 18,014 at the 2010 census. It is located on the coast of Solano County and is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The name "Soledad" is Spanish for "peaceful." The first person to settle in Soledad was Juan Bautista Alvarado, who arrived in 1769 during the Mexican-American War. A year later, Rafael Campos settled here with his family. In 1821, José Castro moved from Mission Dolores to Soledad and began trading goods with Native Americans near Point Reyes National Seashore. When gold was discovered nearby in 1848, many people started moving to soledad because it became known as the "Gold Coast." In 1860, Captain James Larkin landed at Point Reyes after sailing around Cape Horn. He named his point Larkin's Rock afterCaptainLarkin himself. By 1870, there were over 150 residents living in Soledad including farmers and fishermen who grew crops and raised livestock on several hundred acres of land north of Point Reyes Station. In 1873, 3 brothers - Manuel Amador (Manuel Antonio), Don Miguel Amador (Miguel De la Torre) and Joaquin Noriega (Joaquín Noriega) - founded what would become Agua Caliente Electric Company which built wires all along the coast from Santa Cruz to Monterey Peninsula between 1888-1892 making this one of the largest private companies ever organized outside of North America at that time! One can still visit their company’s headquarters today on Telegraph Hill behind City Hall! In 1906 when Governor George Hearst opened up Sonoma County by splitting it off from Marin County he made sure that Judge John Woolridge would preside over the new county courthouse being built on Market Street just east of Highway 1A in downtown Soledad – now home to both TheMarketsSF & First United Methodist Church). Also during 1906-1907 Judge Woolridge constructed a large addition to SOLEDAD’S STATE HOSPITAL called “The White House” which still stands today across from CITY hall – also currently used as an event space by local nonprofits! This building served as our county government until 1929 when we moved into OUR OWN NEW COUNTY COURTHOUSE which remains our seat today!
The first Europeans to visit Soledad were the Spanish in 1821. The area now known as Soledad was part of Rancho San Antonio de las Pulgas, a Mexican land grant given to José María Castro, who named it after his sister, Santeria (St. Augustine). In 1847, the US government acquired Rancho San Antonio and renamed it Alta California. In 1849, Pedro Rodríguez Caballero established a rancho at Soledad and named it Villa de la Cruz. It was here that Captain José María Peralta founded the first school in Alta California on March 20, 1851. On December 6, 1860, Californio Joaquín Arguelles y Soto founded the town of Paso Robles outside of present-day Santa Clara County. He named it after his father's hometown of Paso Robles, New Mexico. Ildefonso Ortiz y Urdialde founded another townsite called Mira Mesa in 1863 but this name disappeared soon afterwards without any record of its existence or use.
