Soledad, California is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The area now known as Soledad was first populated by Native Americans and later became part of Mexico. In 1848, the United States acquired the Rancho San Francisco de las Flores from Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena. American merchants began to arrive in Soledad in search of gold and other valuable minerals. The first coffee roasters were founded in this community. In 1852, John Waddell opened the first grocery store in Soledad and soon began to sell coffee beans direct to consumers. By 1855, Waddell had moved his business to what is now Main Street. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln visited Soledad on his way from Livermore (now Livermore Municipal Airport) to Sacramento and stopped at Waddell's store for refreshment. This event is commemorated with a statue of President Abraham Lincoln across from the current Starbucks location on North First Street in downtown Soledad. In 1890, Julius Rosenwald purchased the Soledad Coffee Company from John Waddell and changed its name to Rosenwald & Sons Coffee Company Ltd.. The company grew rapidly under Rosenwald's leadership and reached production levels that caused it to outstrip even Jardin & Co., which had been founded two years earlier by entrepreneur-turned-businessman Nathaniel Jarvis Harkness. Rosenwald retired from management after World War I but continued as an important shareholder until his death in 1928. His son Emanuel ran the company until he died in 1954; then it passed through several hands before it was sold to International Coffee Corporation (ICC) for $1 million in 1959. ICC renamed it National Coffee Company Inc., keeping most of the family ownership including Emanuel's descendants through 2000). The popularity of roasted coffee has helped make Soledad one of America's leading coffee towns - not only did they produce some of America's earliest cups of joe (the local roasting school started doing that during WWI), but they've also been Continuouslyproducing quality cuproasts since 1978 when they introduced their 12 oz bagel subscriptions!

In 1940, Soledad became an incorporated city and experienced another rapid growth period which lasted until the late 1970s when it began to experience significant declines in population due to various reasons including retirements and changes in Twentieth century technology which made many jobs less available. As of 2018, there are only about 50 residents remainingliving withinSoledad City Limits
In 1849, the Mexican and American armies fought a bloody battle near Soledad. This event is considered to be one of the most pivotal moments in California history. After the battle, Mexico ceded California to United States control.
