He named the town after his daughter-in-law,Soledad Carrillo y O'Higgins. In 1851, a group of Mormons arrived and built a small cabin on the old Rancho Santa Anita. The cabin served as a trading post until 1854 when it was taken over by Captain John Sutter and his family. Captain Sutter used the cabin as their home until he died in 1858. His family then passed it on to their son William Sutter Jr., who continued to live there until 1923 when it was sold to Mr. and Mrs. John Boice from Stockton, California. The first store in Soledad opened its doors in 1865 by Wm Atherton under the name "Athertons'. After years of development, Athertons finally closed its doors for good in 1931 and reopened as The Gift Shop Of Soledad which still remains open today! Over time, many other businesses have occupied space inside or outside of The Gift Shop including ButterscotchMike's Pizza (1962-1983), First National Bank (1968-1996), ABC Radio Corporation (1969-1991) and most recently KFC World Headquarters (2006-present). Today's incarnation of The Gift Shop continues to be one of the most popular tourist attractions in town! Today,Soledad is known throughout Southern California for its unique gift shops where shoppers can find unique items such as Funko POPs (2015), collectible coins (1964), American flags (1893) and even Barbie dolls! Soledad is a small town located in the Inland Empire of California. The population was 3,969 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Bernardino County metropolitan area. Soledad is named after Spanish explorer and soldier Captain Diego Rivera, who discovered it in 1821 while exploring the San Gabriel Valley. The original adobe buildings that remain today date back to 1852. The community began as a farming and ranching village with an estimated 100 residents in 1880. A sawmill, gristmill and bakery were built before railroad construction arrived in 1901 and Soledad became one of the first communities served by Southern Pacific Railroad. A post office was established in 1902, but it closed operations two years later because of low mail volume. A store opened in 1904 and continued operation until 1942 when it was destroyed by fire

Soledad is a small town in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Stockton-Lodi-Mountain View, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Soledad were the Ohlone Indians who inhabited the area from about 1800 until 1821 when they were forced to leave by Boggs and others as part of the California Gold Rush. From 1851 to 1858, Soledad was part of Contra Costa County. In 1871 it became part of San Joaquin County. In 1916, Averill Harriman donated land for a school in Soledad which became Soledad High School. After World War II, many businesses opened up in Soledad and its economy grew rapidly thanks to its location near Interstate 680 and Highway 99. Many new homes were built during this time including several high-rise apartments that still stand today on Main Street between Harrison and Walnut streets. A major event that took place in Soledad during this time was the 1984 Summer Olympics which brought many people into town for work or pleasure. After that point, many businesses closed down or moved out as technology began taking over much of human activity; however, some businesses have continued to operate such as FedEx Ground & USPS Mailboxes on Main Street since then
