Soledad is a small town in the center of California, about an hour's drive from Sacramento. The population was 3,827 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the San Joaquin Valley and has a rich agricultural history dating back to 1849. Today, Soledad is a vibrant community with a wide range of businesses and cultural attractions. The Soledad-Rodriguez School District offers kindergarten through 12th grade education. The first permanent settler in what would become Soledad County was José María Rodriguez in 1849. He and his wife, Maria Antonia de la Garza, founded a small rancho on Rancho Rinconada east of present day Fresno. By 1860, Rodríguez had built three adobe buildings on his new property which he named "Tahoe" after his friend Jedediah Tahoe who had helped him find land near Yosemite National Park in 1851. In 1865, John Sutter arrived at Red Bluff on the American River with 5 men and started to build the California State Capitol here in what would be called Sutter's Fortification Hill today. In 1886 John Muir visited this area and reported favorably on the beauty of the redwoods which then formed much of Soledad's early economy including lumbering operations that continued until World War II when most logging stopped due to war production quotas. One postman living in Soledad during World War II said "There wasn't one house or barn left standing around here when we got out... everything was burned." After 1945 many residents moved away due to various reasons such as economic decline or changes brought about by war; however some returned throughout the 1970s and 1980s while others still live scattered around town today (2011 Census). originally located off main street near high school
